Tough Battle Against Wolves

Boys’ basketball team has been working their way up towards the top heading into regions soon. Their talent and skills continue to allow them to defeat teams; however, facing the Vermillion Tanagers was a harder battle to fight out. Laying it all out onto the court, the Huskies still fell short to the Tanagers Thursday, Jan. 31.
“We started off hot,” junior Jonah Hofer said. “But they started making most of their shots and things started not clicking for us. We started not playing as a team and our offense stopped clicking. I do think this loss, however, benefitted us to realize that teamwork is a key role in winning.”
To start off the game, senior Sawyer Schultz jumped for the ball. The Huskies managed to score right away. The boys managed to keep scoring and pushing the flow of the game. The score to end the first quarter was 21-16, the Huskies leading
Starting the second quarter, Vermillion managed to set the pace. The Huskies managed to keep scoring, but so did the Tanagers. The Huskies tried to shut them down, but they kept racking up points. The boys kept fighting, trying to take the lead but Vermillion did not give up. Going into half time, the score was 35-42, the Huskies trailing.
“We came out hard, but it slowly went downhill from there,” senior Jamin Arend said. “We managed to pick up the pace in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough for us to pull off the win.”
Beginning the second half, the Huskies allowed the Tanagers to set the game pace again. The Huskies allowed the Tanagers to score quite more than them, but they continued to score themselves. To end the third quarter, the score was 43-62 with the Tanagers still leading.
Throughout the fourth quarter, the Huskies picked up their game pace. They managed to score more than the Tanagers this quarter. This allowed them to catch up a little more, but still not enough for the Huskies to take the lead. The final score was 71-76, the Huskies falling to the Tanagers by 5 points.
“It was a tough loss,” sophomore Rylee Schultz said. “However, the loss helped us come together as a team and focus our games to come on working together.”
Overall all stats for the game consisted of Schultz with 33 points and six rebounds and Jamin Arend with 20 points. The other senior, Carter Dye, managed to rack up 16 points while leading the Huskies in rebounds with nine.
