Track season for the B-E Huskies, or for anyone, has been delayed for the past few weeks. The Huskies have been able to compete at only a few track meets, but that doesn’t hold them down. The team continues to work hard and make room for improvement, trying to qualify for the state track meet in Rapid City May 26-27.
“The weather was a little rough at the beginning of the season but if we continue to work hard, we can hopefully make it back to the state meet,” junior Kristin Kotas said.
The first track meet the Huskies attended was in Menno Apr. 12. For the girls, junior Joslyn Schrank, sophomore Kennedee Weber, freshman Kerrigan Schultz and eighth-grader Julia Weber placed fifth in the 1600-meter relay (4x400), with a time of 4:39. Qualifying time for the 4x400 is 4:20. Also for the girls, juniors Kristin Kotas, Schrank, Weber and Weber placed fifth in the 3200-meter relay (4x800), with a time of 11:07. Qualifying time for the 4x800 is 10:32.
For the boys, sophomore Jonah Hofer placed seventh in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:23. Qualifying for the 800 is 2:06. Senior Duot Van Sickle threw 43-04, placing fourth in the shot put. Qualifying is 45-1. Also for the boys, juniors Jevin Eddy and Jamin Arend, sophomore Chase Arend and freshman Bodie Burnham placed eighth in the 4x400 with a time of 4:00, qualifying time being 3:39.
“We definitely have improved since our first meet, and I believe we will keep doing so. We just need to get more track meets in. The season started off rough with the weather but being able to get out on the track a little more now will really help us improve,” Schultz said.
The second track meet the Huskies attended was also in Menno Apr. 26. For the girls, two individuals placed in running events. Sophomore Kennedee Weber placed fourth in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:05, four seconds from qualifying, and eighth-grader Taylor Schallenkamp who placed fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:53, the qualifying time being 2:29. Juniors Jada Wethor, Kotas and Schrank along with Schultz, placed seventh in the medley with a time of 5:04, the qualifying time being 4:35.
For the boys, three individuals placed in the meet. Van Sickle placed first in the discus with a throw of 132-10 and third in shot put with a throw of 45-03. Van Sickle qualified for state in shot put and is less than four feet away from qualifying in discus! Sophomore Jonah Hofer placed fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20 and seventh in long jump with a jump of 17-01. Freshman Jaden Stevenson placed seventh in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:12, the qualifying time being 4:46. Eddy, Chase Arend, and freshman Burnham and Brandon Jansen placed eighth in the 400-meter relay (4x100) with a time of 52 seconds, six seconds from qualifying. Eddy, Chase Arend, Hofer and Burnham placed eighth in the 800-meter relay (4x200) with a time of 1:43, the qualifying time being 1:35. Stevenson, Chase Arend, Hofer and Eddy placed seventh in the 4x400 with a time of 4:03, 24 seconds from qualifying.
“It was my 3rd and final throw in finals and I gave it all I had. I thank god for this opportunity to compete at the state level once again,” Van Sickle said.
Overall, both the boys and girls improved from the first meet to the second meet. If they continue to work hard, they will find themselves at the state meet at the end of May.
