Tan Lines and Qualifying Times

A hot, sunny day, May 8, both the Bridgewater-Emery junior high and high school track team ventured to Avon for the invitational Fort Randall Conference track meet. The temperature was around 75-80 degrees with a slight breeze to cool a person off every once and awhile.
“I’ve enjoyed running with the varsity girls because it gives me a constant challenge to work for. Running with the older, faster girls only betters myself. I enjoy running the 4x800 because it makes me feel improved to be running on the state qualifying team at some meets. It allows me to step up to the plate, accept the challenge and only better myself from here on out,” eighth-grader Taylor Schallenkamp said.
For the junior high girls’ team, eighth-graders Cara and Casey Meyer placed second (2:48.1) and third (2:48.3) in the open 800-meter run. Eighth-grader Grace DiGiovanni placed sixth in discus with a throw of 58’8.5”. Eighth-graders Kaitlyn Roskens, Jordyn Vinz and the Meyer twins ran the 400-meter relay (4x100) placing fourth with a time of 1:02, the 800-meter relay (4x200) placing fifth with a time of 2:09 and the 1600-meter relay (4x400) placing second with a time of 4:59. Vinz, Roskens, DiGiovanni and eighth-grader Morgan Uptagrafft made up the medley relay (100, 100, 200, 400) placing sixth with a time of 2:22.
For the junior high boys’ team, seventh graders Aguer Van Sickle placed fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 31 seconds and fourth in high jump with a height of 4’8”, Sam Hofer placed fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 67 seconds and Jaden Eddy placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 22 seconds. Seventh graders Jerin Schulz, Owen Fink, Landon Acuna-Popkes and Sam Hofer made up 800-meter relay placing sixth with a time of 2:13. Eddy, Van Sickle, Fink and Hofer placed sixth in the 1600-meter relay with a time of 5:13.
For the high school girls’ team, eighth-graders Julia Weber placed sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29 seconds and sixth in long jump with a length of 13’8”, and Taylor Schallenkamp placed fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:10 (70 seconds). Sophomore Kennedee Weber placed first in the 800-meter run with a state qualifying of 2:28 and placed fourth in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:51! Sophomore Lindsey Weeldreyer placed fourth in the 3200-meter run with a time of 14:45. Juniors Kristin Kotas and Joslyn Schrank along with Schallenkamp and Julia Weber placed second in the 3200-meter relay (4x800) with a time of 10:45. Kotas, Schrank and the two Weber girls made up the 1600-meter relay, which placed fourth with a time of 4:26, six seconds away from state qualifying standards. Schallenkamp, freshman Kerrigan Schultz, Kotas and Schrank placed fourth in the medley relay (200, 200, 400, 800) with a time of 4:52. Freshman Sara Hofer and Katrina Van Sickle and juniors Bell DiGiovanni and Jada Wethor placed sixth in the 800-meter relay with a time of 2:21. Schultz, Schallenkamp, Kotas and Schrank made up the 400-meter relay that placed fifth with a time of 56 seconds.
“I’m super excited for the state track meet coming up in a couple of weeks. I’ve really enjoyed the season, getting to know the girls a little bit more and, of course, improving my times from last year. I look forward to qualifying the 4x400 and medley at regions,” Julia Weber said.
For the high school boys’ team, juniors Jevin Eddy placed fourth (12.9 seconds) and Jamin Arend placed second (12.0 seconds) in the 100-meter dash. Eddy also placed sixth (26.9 seconds) and Arend placed second (23.9 seconds) in the 200-meter dash. Freshman Bodie Burnham placed fifth (13.0 seconds) in the 100-meter dash, and sophomore Chase Arend placed third (24.3 seconds) in the 200-meter dash. Jamin Arend also placed third (55.0 seconds) and Chase Arend placed fourth (56.15 seconds) in the 400-meter dash. Sophomore Jonah Hofer placed sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:13 and third in long jump with a length of 17’11.75”. Senior Duot Van Sickle placed fourth in shot put with a throw of 42’9” and second in discus with a throw of 150 7”. Freshmen Brandon Jansen placed sixth with a height of 4’10” and Hunter Uptagrafft with a height of 4’10” in high jump. Junior Kyler Clagget placed sixth in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:58. Sophomore Nick Schallenkamp, Chase Arend, Burnham and Jansen placed third in the 800-meter relay with a time of 1:44. Eddy, Hofer and the two Arend boys made up the fifth-place team in the 1600-meter relay with a time of 3:49. Freshmen Camden Dye and Hunter Uptagrafft, along with Schallenkamp and Jansen placed third in the 3200-meter relay with a time of 10:19.
“I’m very excited to be competing as an individual again this year but as a runner! I believe I’ve improved since last year. I started running after basketball season to get in shape for track. I continue to run on the weekends and try not have many days off. My motivation for these actions would be the half-marathon I am training for, wanting to be MVP runner again this year and trying to improve my times. I tried to push myself to the best possible me,” Kennedee Weber said.
The following Huskies will be competing at the state meet as of now: Duot Van Sickle (shot put and discus), Kennedee Weber (800-meter run and 4x800), Kristin Kotas (4x800), Julia Weber (4x800) and Joslyn Schrank (4x800).
