State Oral Interpretation
By Joslyn Schrank on November 26, 2018
Two students from Bridgewater-Emery competed at the region level for Oral Interpretation. Senior Mercedes Mesman competed in the “Original Oratory” category, and junior Lindsey Weeldreyer competed in the “Humorous” category. Both presented well enough to move onto the state level competition.
Weeldreyer’s piece is called “Infomercial” which entails a girl who is obsessed with infomercials. The character in Weeldreyer’s piece realizes that the products promoted in these infomercials are worthless. She then decides that infomercials can be put to better use—dating.
“I am looking forward to the experience, it being my first time at the state competition,” Weeldreyer said. “I am excited to be able to share my piece with others. I really enjoy oral interpretation.”
“Listen to This When You Feel Unappreciated” is the piece Mesman will be competing with at the state competition. Her piece tries to portray a message to the audience about feeling unappreciated. By the end of her performance, the audience has gained an understanding of how to deal with and overcome the thoughts of feeling unappreciated.
“This being my second year competing, I am just as excited to be advancing to the state level,” Mesman said. “However, in the past, I received an excellent, so I’ve got some unfinished business at state to receive a superior rating this year.”
The state competition will be held Friday, Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 1. in Watertown. Weeldreyer competes Friday, while Mesman competes Saturday. The contestants will perform to receive either a superior or excellent rating.
