State FCCLA

April 10, 2019
Bridgewater-Emery high school students attended State FCCLA Sunday, March 31 to April 2 in Sioux Falls.
Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is full of a bunch of new opportunities for students to get involved in. There are many great workshops that help kids with future problems or to teach the safety of driving.

“I think FCCLA is a great opportunity for students to network and learn about important topics that the youth can take with them today,” FCCLA advisor Frankie Nelson said.

Each student competes in a STAR event while attending the state conference. This can help kids work on their communication skills along with presentation skills. The BE FCCLA had several people earn gold at the conference along with seven people advancing to nationals in Anaheim, California in July. To advance to nationals you are the top in your category. Advancing to state for B-E was sophomores Shaylee Longe and Katrina Vansickle in Life Event Planning, seniors Katelyn Kotas and Kristin Kotas in Chapter Service Project Display, senior Jada Wethor in Teach and Train and sophomore Marah Hofer in Leadership.

“I really think it is a good time for leadership and meeting new people,” Burnham said. “My favorite part is the talent show.”

Longe and sophomore Keesha Letcher were selected to the 2019-2020 State Outreach Leadership team. Letcher also received the Teens as Teachers Scholarship and Kristin Kotas received the State FCCLA Scholarship.

Earning a “Gold Rating” by receiving scores of 90 to 100 percent were seniors Tessa Burnham, Abigal Arend, Cate Meyer, Kristin Kotas, Katelyn Kotas, Wethor, and Joslyn Schrank; sophomores Kerrigan Schultz, Sara Hofer, Marah Hofer, Letcher, VanSickle, Longe and Hunter Uptagrafft. Senior Vanessa Hofer, senior Kinzer Glanzer and junior Jonah Hofer received a “Silver Rating” by receiving scores of 70 to 89 percent.

“My favorite part was meeting new people, and competing in my STAR event,” Arend said.

Other fun activities at the conference include a dance, movie, driving simulator, board games, the FCCLA talent show, karaoke.
