Small but Mighty

Bridgewater-Emery track and field traveled to Scotland Tuesday, April 2 to compete in their first track meet of the year. The day was cold and long, resulting in the students having to run in the dark with the stadium lights on, but what’s a track meet without a little challenge and excitement?
“Being a senior, I am excited to see what is in store for myself, Joslyn (Schrank), and the younger girls,” senior Kristin Kotas said. “I believe we have a talented team who can accomplish great things, and the work ethic those girls have will get us to where we need to be.”
Junior Jonah Hofer was the only boy to place in an open event, placing himself 6th in the 400 and 2nd in the 800 with times of 58 seconds and 2:18.
“It was a decent first track meet,” Hofer said. “We don’t have a lot of boys out, but we will make do with what we have by always giving our all in every race.”
For the girls' open events, juniors Kennedee Weber placed 2nd in the 800 with a time of 2:45, while Lindsey Weeldreyer placed 5th in the 2-mile with a time of 15:44. For the relays, the 4x800 team placed 2nd, consisting of Kotas and senior Joslyn Schrank and freshmen Julia Weber and Taylor Schallenkamp. The medley team placed 2nd, consisting of Kotas, Schrank, sophomore Kerrigan Schultz and Schallenkamp. Lastly, the 4x400 placed 4th, consisting of both Weber sisters, Schrank and Kotas.
“I’m excited to see how far our relays will go this year,” Schallenkamp said. “These girls made track awesome last year, and I am excited to be spending another track season with them, improving times to reach our goals.”
The B-E track and field team traveled to Salem Tuesday, April 9, and Menno Thursday, April 11.
