Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan Seahawks defeated Big East Conference rivals Sioux Valley Cossacks 55-12 Friday, Oct. 12 in Sioux Valley.
“We came out ready to play,” head coach Jeff VanLeur said. “We jumped on top like we should do every single game. I thought we did a really nice job defensively and blocking up front.”
To start off the first quarter, the Seahawks received the ball from the Cossacks. The Seahawks managed to rack up 28 points. The first touchdown was scored on a pass from quarterback junior Brady Hawkins to receiver junior Jonah Hofer for 7 yards. Senior Jamin Arend scored the next touchdown on a 58-yard run. Senior Sawyer Schultz recovered a fumble and ran it in for a 28-yard touchdown. Junior Grant Andrews scored a one-yard rushing touchdown. PAT by Hawkins was good on each touchdown. The Seahawks held the Cossacks, leaving the score 28-0 to end the first quarter.
“We did well,” senior Carter Dye said. “We threw our passes deep which seemed to work for us well. Defensively, we did well on the line.”
In the second quarter and third quarter, the Seahawks managed to score a touchdown on a four-yard run by Hawkins, PAT by Hawkins was no good. The Cossacks scored as well on a one-yard touchdown, the two-point conversion failed. The halftime score was 34-6 in favor of the Seahawks.
“Our O-line did a nice job of sustaining the blocks and keeping our pad levels low,” assistant coach Griffith VanLeur said.
To start the third quarter, the Cossacks scored on an 11-yard pass, extra point conversion failed. BEE answered back with a one-yard run from Arend, PAT by Hawkins no good. The score to end the score third quarter was 40-12.
The last quarter consisted of the Seahawks scoring two touchdowns off a 20 yard run by Arend and a 53 yard run by sophomore Bodie Burnham. The Seahawks defense held the Cossacks to 12, making the final score 55-12.
“Offensively, I thought we dominated,” sophomore Rylee Schultz said. “Defensively, we came out ready to play but lost our concentration later in the game, which caused us a loss of two touchdowns.”
Arend led the Seahawks with three touchdowns and 273 yards on 31 carries. Hawkins added a touchdown and went 3 for 5 for a total of 82 yards passing. As a team, the Seahawks finished with 450 offensive yards on 58 plays, with 386 yards on the ground.
On the defensive side, Andrews and Hawkins each pitched in eight tackles, while Dye added nine tackles.
The Seahawks finished regular season play with a 7-1 record and won the Big East Conference.
