The Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan Seahawks (6-2) hosted the McCook Central/Montrose Fighting Cougars (5-3) in Bridgewater Oct. 19. The Seahawks managed to defeat the Fighting Cougars 42-0.
The game started off with a kick from Abiah Plastow for 48 yards and Bryce Smart of MCM returning it six yards. Later in the quarter, running back Jamin Arend ran past the defenders for a three-yard touchdown, and Plastow contributed a point after the touchdown (P.A.T.). Brady Hawkins later ran four yards for a touchdown and Abiah Plastow added a P.A.T. Safety Mason Potter contributed two interceptions for the Seahawks along with safety Derek Storm, who added one interception. BEE defended MCM well, holding them to zero points and seven carries for negative six yards during the first quarter. The Seahawks ended the first quarter with two touchdowns and 49 yards for 12 carries.
“It felt great to receive those interceptions but I feel like most of it was luck. Their quarterback threw the ball almost directly to me. It was great to see my team get excited from the interceptions I received. Overall, I thought we played well and came ready to play,” Mason Potter said.
During the second quarter, the Seahawks managed to hold the Cougars to 37 yards with seven carries. Although letting the Cougars gain more yards, the Seahawks still managed to score three touchdowns. Plastow added an interception and a P.A.T. while quarterback Brady Hawkins added a two-point conversion along with an 80-yard run for a touchdown. Arend contributed an interception and a touchdown while Potter added an interception. Running back Dustin Weber added a touchdown for the Seahawks, as well. The Seahawks ended the quarter with 164 yards for ten carries.
To start off the second half, the Fighting Cougars kicked off and Plastow to returned the ball sixteen yards. The Seahawks managed to hold the Cougars to 36 yards for nine carries. The Seahawks kept shutting down their passes and finding the ball when they rushed. The JV replaced the Varsity within the last four minutes of the third quarter. The Seahawks ended the quarter with 52 yards for four carries. Weber and Arend both had a 26-yard run.
“I think we came with a lot of intensity and kept that up throughout the whole game. Along with keeping our mistakes down, we managed to dominate on both sides of the ball,” Dustin Weber said.
To finish the game off, the last quarter consisted of the JV players for both teams. The Fighting Cougars managed to capture 53 yards for nine carries while the Seahawks rounded up 9 yards for seven carries. Rylee Schultz had a nine-yard run off the play.
Statistics for the win over MCM consisted of Jamin Arend with 112 rushing yards while Brady Hawkins contributed 107 rushing yards. Mason Potter added three interceptions while Arend, Plastow and Storm each added one. Both Dustin Weber and Bradlee Schultz contributed eight tackles.
“I thought our offense and defense really set the tone. Our linemen did an awesome job of opening up the gaps and I hope we can just go out and take care of business against Winner,” Coach VanLeur said.
Going into the quarter finals to play Winner, the Seahawks hold a record of 7-2.
