Returning for Three Years in a Row
March 11, 2019
Bridgewater-Emery boys basketball team took on the Colome Cowboys on Tuesday, March 4 at the Corn Palace. The Huskies won 58-45 to give them another run at the State ‘B’ boys basketball tournament in Aberdeen March 14-16.
It was a close game in the starting minutes as the Huskies struggled taking care of the ball and finding easy shots to put in. The Cowboys slowed down the pace and kept right with the Huskies shot for shot to keep themselves in the game. It was a low scoring first half as both teams struggled to find ways to make shots as the score going into halftime was 19-14.
“I was happy with the way the boys responded second half, we were a little out of sync first half and we were rushing our shots,” head coach Scott Schultz said. “Second half we settled in and were more patient and rebounded the ball well, and played much better offensively.”
The Huskies came out of halftime looking to take another look at the state tournament. The Huskies started pulling away in the third quarter as the Cowboys struggled to stop the Huskies on the drive to the basket. The Huskies led going into the fourth quarter 34-25. Going into the final quarter the Huskies didn’t want the season to end now as they picked up the intensity and defensive play along with a big 3-pointer for senior guard Jamin Arend and a layup by senior Sawyer Schultz after Colome cut the deficit to five to seal the win for B-E.
“It was a good win,” Jamin Arend said. “We didn’t play all that well, but good teams find ways to win. It’s a great feeling to be back at state, and hopefully, we can bring home a championship.”
The Huskies placed four players in double figures with Sawyer Schultz scoring 20 points, 17 rebounds and five assists. Senior Carter Dye added 14 points and eight boards, while junior Chase Arend and Jamin Arend Scored 11 and 10 points.
The Huskies will take on Timberlake at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 14 at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen.
