The Bridgewater-Emery Huskies track team made their way to the Don Diede Relays May 1 in Freeman. It was a beautiful day for a track meet, and even though it was cold most of the day, it’s evident we can all say that fifty degrees with some wind and a little sun is better than white fluff on the ground. Several individuals also competed at the Howard Wood track meet in Sioux Falls, May 4th and 5th at which B-E had their first qualifying relay.
I thought it was exciting because it was the second year in a row that we have qualified for the state meet. I am excited to make a trip to Rapid City, and I can’t wait to see what else this season has in store for myself and my team,” sophomore Kennedee Weber said.
For the girls on Tuesday, Kennedee Weber placed first in the open 400-meter dash with a time of 63 seconds and eighth in long jump with a jump of 14 feet. Freshman Kerrigan Schultz placed fifth in the open 800-meter run with a time of three minutes. Junior Bella DiGiovanni placed seventh in discus with a throw of 88’1”. The 400-meter relay placed sixth, consisting of eighth-grader Taylor Schallenkamp, freshmen Kerrigan Schultz and Sara Hofer and junior Jada Wethor. The 3200-meter relay placed second, consisting of eighth-grader Julia Weber, Kennedee Weber and juniors Kristin Kotas and Joslyn Schrank. The medley relay also placed second, consisting of Schrank, Kotas, Julia Weber and Schallenkamp. Lastly, the 1600-meter relay placed third, consisting of the two Weber girls, Schultz and Schrank.
For the boys on Tuesday, senior Duot Van Sickle placed first in discus with a throw of 146’10”, qualifying for state, and placed second in shot put with a throw of 43’7”. The boys’ medley relay placed sixth, consisting of freshman Jaden Stevenson, sophomores Chase Arend and Jonah Hofer and junior Jevin Eddy. The 1600-meter relay placed third, consisting of Junior Jamin Arend, Chase Arend, Hofer and Stevenson.
“Starting off the year was a little rough with the weather, but as we continue to have meets, we continue to improve our times and places. We need to continue to work hard and see if we can qualify some events for state,” Hofer said.
The following individuals participated at the track meet in Sioux Falls: Kennedee Weber, Julia Weber, Kristin Kotas, Kerrigan Schultz, Jada Wethor, Taylor Schallenkamp, Joslyn Schrank, Jamin Arend, Chase Arend, Jonah Hofer, Jevin Eddy, Jaden Stevenson, Bodie Burnham and Duot Van Sickle.
The boys’ relays consisted of Chase Arend, Stevenson, Eddy and Burnham for the 4x200 meter relay with a time of 1:43. The 4x400 relay was canceled due to weather. Both relays, unfortunately, did not place. Duot Van Sickle was the only one to compete individually, the events being both shot put and discus.
The girls’ relays consisted of Taylor Schallenkamp, Jada Wethor, Kristin Kotas and Joslyn Schrank for the 4x200 (800-meter relay). Unfortunately, the 4x200 did not place at Howard Wood. Kerrigan Schultz, Julia Weber, Kennedee Weber and Joslyn Schrank made up the team for the sprint medley (200, 200, 400, 800). Sadly, the sprint medley was disqualified at Howard Wood but they were only one second away from the state qualifying time of 4:35. Julia Weber, Kennedee Weber, Kristin Kotas and Joslyn Schrank were entered to run the 4x400 (1600-meter relay) but were unable to run it due to weather and the cancellation of the last three hours of the Howard Wood track meet. Kennedee Weber, Julia Weber, Kristin Kotas and Joslyn Schrank made up the 4x800 (3200-meter relay) and qualified for the state track meet in Rapid City with a time of 10:29!
“Even though this track season has been short due to the weather, we still powered through; we even qualified earlier in the season than last year,” Kotas said.
The state track meet will be held in Rapid City, SD, May 25-26.
