New Members Inducted in National Honors Society
By Joslyn Schrank on December 5, 2018
Bridgewater-Emery juniors and seniors that qualify were inducted into B-E’s National Honors Society (NHS) Tuesday, Dec. 4 in Emery at 7 p.m. Previous senior membership and underclassmen incentives were also recognized.
National Honors Society is based on four pillars: scholarship, leadership, service and character. Each chapter, however, sets their own standards based off of those four pillars. At Bridgewater-Emery students must maintain a GPA of 3.25 after at least four semesters of high school. If students meet that academic requirement, then they can fill out an application that further asks students about their extra-curricular involvement, leadership positions, work experience and volunteer experience. The application also requires an essay. After the applications are competed, NHS membership is decided by a panel of 3-4 teachers. The teachers go through each application and discuss each student’s character and application materials.
“The National Honor Society induction ceremony is a great way to recognize some of Bridgewater-Emery’s outstanding students,” NHS advisor Ms. Forman said. “It has been really exciting watching these individuals grow the past few years and emerge as leaders in their junior and senior years. Many students join NHS in order to grow as a leader and act as a role model for younger students. It allows junior and senior members to see the impact they can have on the younger students and it gives the younger students something to look up to as they continue on in high school.”
The ceremony began at 7 p.m. Dec. 4. The night began with a welcome from advisor Ms. Forman. Then guest speaker, Jeremy Jansen, was asked to the stage to give his message of leadership to the students. After the speech, the induction ceremony began with a briefing about the history of NHS and the pillars that the organization represents. The new junior and senior members were then called forward to receive their certification, jacket and recognition. Next, the incentive members are then recognized. These incentives are younger classmen that have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
“Being inducted into NHS is a big honor, and I worked hard to achieve this goal of mine,” senior Kinzer Glanzer said.
After all of the recognitions, the ceremony came to a close with desserts and refreshments.
