National Honor Society (NHS) is a national organization established in 1921 to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership and character.

Bridgewater-Emery held their NHS ceremony Dec. 5. On this day, the senior NHS members were recognized, and the new junior members were inducted and given their jackets after the candle ceremony. Senior members include Libby Bailey, Lindsey Berg, Lucas Berg, Andrea Gorriz, Kori Heezen, Haley Hofer, Rebecka Hoffman, Jessica Jaeger, Cassie Kerkhove, Mason Potter, Bradlee Schultz, Cameron Steen, Connor Tuschen, Duot VanSickle, Eunice Vinales and Dustin Weber. The junior members include Abigal Arend, Jamin Arend, Tessa Burnham, Taylor Clark, Jevin Eddy, Vanessa Hofer, Sydney Hoffman, Ashley Horvath, Darby Hurd, Katelyn Kotas, Kristin Kotas, Mercedes Mesman, Cate Meyer, Joslyn Schrank, Sarah Schultz, Sawyer Schultz, Jada Wethor and Sierra Wollmann.

“As a second-year member of NHS, my appreciation continues for this organization that recognizes your accomplishments and hard work. Getting recognized makes you want to do better and work harder,” senior Eunice Vinales said.

When these members applied, they all had completed at least four semesters of high school, and had a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Students interested and eligible had the option to complete an application and write an essay about how they could impact their school and community. The selection of students for membership is determined by a committee of teachers based on the applicants’ proven scholastic achievement, extracurricular activities, leadership positions, community involvement and work experience.

“I think the application process is easy enough because you are just proving your high achieving past experience. The difficult part is every day leading up to this point, dedicating time and effort to make ourselves eligible for this organization,” junior Cate Meyer said.

As for freshmen and sophomores with a grade point average of 3.0 and higher, they are a recognized as incentive members. This means that they have a high chance of being eligible in the future if they continue on their academic and character track. Sophomore incentive members include Chase Arend, Bailey Haiar, Jonah Hofer, Cylie Kressman, Ashlie Martinez, Sophia Potter, Nic Schallenkamp, Haley Schulz, Jasmine Tschetter, Katrina Weber, Kennedee Weber, Lindsey Weeldreyer and Zachary Weaver. Freshmen incentive members include Bodie Burnham, Viola DeMott, Ben Duerksen, Camden Dye, Jayke Glanzer, Brock Hofer, Marah Hofer, Sara Hofer, Brandon Jansen, Brooks Jansen, Connor Kerkhove, Tyler Kjetland, Shaylee Longe, Kerrigan Schultz, Rylee Schultz, Jackson Stahl, Morgan Terveen, Johanna Tusha and Derek Weber.

“Since I am only a sophomore, I was recognized as an incentive member, but I am very appreciative that the incentive members also receive recognition. It reminds us to keep up our excellent work for next year when we apply, which I am planning to do,” sophomore Jonah Hofer said.
