Lady Huskies Advance to SoDak16 for First Time in B-E History
February 25, 2019
Lady Huskies faced Alcester-Hudson for the first round of regions Tuesday, Feb. 19, and advanced onto Thursday’s round, playing Irene-Wakonda to advance to the SoDak16. The Huskies defeated the A-H Cubs 66-51 and the I-W Eagles 57-39.
“Advancing this far has been a dream of mine since I began playing basketball with Sandy Bartcher,” senior Abigal Arend said. “She started us young, put her time and heart into us girls way back in 2nd grade. Because my love for the game started young, I’ve beyond excited for this moment, especially because it is my last year. I am very proud of my teammates and the goals we’ve accomplished this year, and I looked forward to tackling more in the next few weeks.”
Throughout the Alcester-Hudson game, the Huskies kept the lead the whole way through. They continued to push forth on defense and offense, stopping the Cub’s defense and allowing the Huskies to pull further away from A-H. B-E was leading 37-17 at half-time and finish the game ahead by 15, 66-51.
Stats for the game against Alcester-Hudson consisted of sophomore Kerrigan Schultz leading the team offensively with 14 points and seven assists, along with five steals. Freshman Julia Weber added 12 points and five steals, while Arend followed close behind with 11 points. Junior Kennedee Weber pitched in nine points, and freshman Chloe Schmitt racked up seven. Seniors Tessa Burnham and Jada Wethor contributed six points and five points for the Huskies’ win over the Cubs.
The Irene-Wakonda game was a little more draining and exhausting; however, the girls pushed through the adversity and pulled out a win. The Huskies were down the first half, entering the locker room with a score of 18-28. Coming out in the third quarter, their play was completely different. They began boxing out, setting their own pace for the game and finishing on their shots. This allowed the Huskies to defeat I-W 57-39.
“The loss against Irene-Wakonda during the regular season was heartbreaking for us, but we knew we had it in us to defeat them,” senior Jada Wethor said. “We took lots of positive things away from that game, knowing what we needed to do against them if we faced them in regions, which it just so happened to work out that way. We were able to bring out things against I-W that we lacked in the regular season game, which helped us defeat the Eagles.”
Stats for the game against Irene-Wakonda consisted of Arend, who led the team offensively with 20 points. Trailing behind her was Schultz with 19 points and capturing eight rebounds. Julia Weber racked up ten points and six rebounds, while Burnham contributed six points and five rebounds.
“Couldn’t be more proud of the girls. We talked all week that if we find ourselves up ten or down ten points, we needed to play to the buzzer and that’s what they did,” head coach Jessie VanLeur said. “In the I-W game we made a few adjustments on both ends of the court at halftime and that really paid off for us.”
After the Huskies defeated A-H and I-W, their record became 18-3 seating them at #10 in the state with 43.421 seed points. Their spot in the rankings allowed them to be paired up with #7, the Ipswich Tigers. The game will take place at James Valley Christian in Huron at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28.
