Is Technology Creating Solitude and Loneliness?
By Cassidy Stacken on October 5, 2017
You are walking down the main street of a busy city. You look around and everyone is on their cell phones. One person is calling someone, one is Face Timing, one is Snap Chatting and someone is updating their Facebook status. No one is speaking face to face, no one sees one another. Society’s ability to socialize with people around them is steadily declining.
Teens and adults have come to a place where smartphones are a necessity not an accessory. The average teenager receives their first cell phone when they are around the age of 14. However, this age continues to drop as children continue getting phones younger and younger. Many times, these young children know more about technology than their parents. This is because of the new developments and advancements in technology that has created so many new products. Children and teenagers meet thousands of people online and are starting to block out everyone they know in real life. They ignore their families, friends and the people they know and love.
With the internet being such a big part of our civilization, and technology developing so quickly, more and more people have friends only online. Online friends can be a good thing, but unless you meet them in person, there is no way to know who they are or what they are really like.
People too often take the power of the internet and abuse it. Technology has the potential to be something amazing and revolutionary. Instead, we use it to put others down in many ways. Cyber bullying is a real, intense and terrible problem. With the ability to say anything without being held responsible for it, anonymous internet bullying is getting out of hand.
“Nobody has any human interaction. There are a lot of people who get on the internet and say the rudest things. They have no accountably because they are not saying it to their face. Honestly, I think there is less effort involved and it is easier for the people to say and do things that they wouldn’t face to face,” Paula Stacken said.
“Technology makes people lonely because they communicate on their phones instead of going out and talking to them in person,” Bud Stacken said.
Overall, I believe that in today’s world, we rely on technology for everything, whether it is to make instant calls or instant messages. While the ever-improving technology opportunities are often a good thing, they can also be the cause of very bad experiences. Whether it is cyber bullying or simply ignoring the people around us, there are definite cons to this modern machinery. Do you think we rely on technology too much? Is it creating solitude and loneliness?
