By Joslyn Schrank on October 27, 2017
Huskies managed to obtain wins in their last two regular season games. The Bridgewater-Emery Huskies ended the season with a 14-11 record and will continue to strive to keep increasing their record in the upcoming post-season.
Recently, the Huskies swept the Wessington Springs Spartans in three sets Oct. 15 in Wessington Springs. The Huskies managed to minimize their errors and they allowed the Spartans to keep making errors. The Huskies dug up almost all their hits and pushes to the deep corners. The hitters for the Huskies continuously hit at the Spartans which caused the Huskies to get of system. They struggled to set up the ball when our hitters got on top of the ball and swung down. The final scores for each set were 25-12, 25-23 and 25-21.
“I think we played well as a team. We came out ready to play and took care of business like we knew we could,” right side hitter Abigal Arend said.
Stats for the game consisted of middle hitter Sydney Hoffman with eight kills and one block while outside hitter/defensive specialist Katelyn Kotas contributed nine kills, 19 digs and one ace. Setter Kristin Kotas managed to rack up 12 assists while defensive specialist Andrea Gorriz pitched in 18 digs and one ace serve.
Oct. 20 was a big win for the Bridgewater-Emery Huskies! The Huskies managed to defeat the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks, which moved the Huskies up to second seed in their region. The Huskies went out onto the court knowing what needed to be done to move into second seed. They knew they were capable of winning, and that they just needed to communicate, be on their toes to move quickly, be smart with the ball, have continuous energy and bring focus. The Huskies managed to follow through with everything listed before and win against the Blackhawks in four sets. The final scores were 25-19, 22-25, 25-8 and 25-15.
“I definitely think that game was an important win for us. We knew we had to win if we wanted a chance at being second seed in our region and so we did. We came out ready to play and had continuous energy throughout the whole game. We encouraged each other and did not allow the game to slip out of our finger tips. If we made a mistake, we shook it off and set the ball up to get a kill making up for our previous mistake,” Sophia Potter said.
Stats for the important win consisted of Hoffman with 11 kills and four blocks while middle hitter Haley Schulz added six kills and six blocks. Outside hitter Kennedee Weber contributed seven kills while Katelyn Kotas added three kills and 35 digs. Setter Sophia Potter racked up 16 assists, ten digs and two aces for the Huskies. Defensive specialist Libby Bailey contributed 18 digs and two aces.
“I see us as a top competitor in our region tournament. We have played a tougher schedule than most of the teams in our region, and I see this as a real advantage heading into the post season. Even with playing more skilled, high seed point teams, we could be successful enough to secure the 2nd rank in our region, which is also an accomplishment. We’ve played a lot of 5 set games throughout the season, and the lessons those types of games teach about mental toughness, finishing a game, working together are things you can only really learn through experience. We lost one of those games to Freeman early in the season. Freeman is in our half of the region. If we see them again, it will be another great game. I think that with the way the girls have been playing and preparing, we’ll see ourselves playing beyond the region tournament. We are excited to be hosting in our gym, the girls deserve that after a great season. We are excited for regions to start and we’re ready to play,” head coach Mary Ernster said.
The Bridgewater-Emery Huskies will host the bottom bracket of the Region 5B volleyball tournament in Emery Tuesday, Oct. 31. The Huskies with play the Irene/Wakonda Eagles at 6 p.m. The Freeman Flyers will play the Freeman Academy/Marion Bearcats at 7:30 p.m. The winner of those two games will play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, at the site of the highest seeded remaining team.
