Huskies Spike Down Bearcats

Bridgewater-Emery Huskies defeated the Freeman Academy/Marion Bearcats in three sets, Tuesday, Oct. 30, in the second round of the Region 5B Volleyball Tournament. The score sets were 25-13, 25-19 and 25-10.
“We came ready to play,” freshman Julia Weber said. “I think we did many things well, but I think we just need to continue to bring energy on the court. When we are down, we should continue to bring the same energy we would if we were ahead. Our team has a lot of potential, and our energy is something that is hard to find but also very important. If we continue to keep up our energy and talk, we will be unbeatable.”
The Huskies stepped onto the court knowing what needed to be done. The Huskies came out hard the first set, making very few errors. Serve receivers passed the ball up to the setter, allowing the hitters to get on top of the ball and hit it down. The Huskies’ ace serves allowed them to rack up a few points against the Bearcats, as well.
“We knew this was an important game coming onto the court, and so, we came out strong and loud right from the beginning,” senior Sydney Hoffman said.” This put us in a big lead right away, leading to a win. Being the first team of the game to build momentum is what led to our win, and that is the secret to being successful in every game, so I hope that we go out that strong for the rest of the season.”
Stats for the Huskies included Hoffman with ten kills, one block and four ace serves. Weber added five kills to the Huskies offensively. Junior Haley Schulz contributed three blocks and four kills at the net. Sophomore Kerrigan Schultz pitched in 16 assists, while junior Sophia Potter added eight. Defensively, senior Katelyn Kotas contributed 12 digs, while senior Joslyn Schrank added 16.
“I thought we played very well,” Kotas said. “We showed people the reason we were the number one seed by going out hard and defeating them in three. I was very proud of how we played and was thankful for all the support from our family, friends, student body, faculty and staff and community members.
The Huskies played Menno, Thursday, Nov. 1, to move on to the “SoDak 16”.
