Huskies Lose a Close Match Against the Pirates

By Kerrigan Schultz on October 16, 2018
The Huskies fell to Avon in five close sets Thursday, Sept. 27. The set scores were 27-25, 25-22, 16-25, 16-25, 15-10.
“I thought it was a good game for us even if it didn’t fall our way,” senior Katelyn Kotas said. “We stayed strong and played as a team to go back and win the third and fourth sets. I am very proud of all our work this season.”

In the first and second sets, the Huskies made some errors at crucial times which gave Avon a bigger lead. The Huskies tried to battle back but just came up short in the first two sets. After losing the first two sets the Huskies knew they had to fight from being down 0-2  if they wanted to win this match. The Huskies picked up their energy and work together as a team to take down the Pirates in the next two sets.

With the sets tied 2-2, the Huskies were looking to add another win to their schedule. It was a battle point for point before the Pirates pulled away with the win in the fifth set.

B-E Sophomore Kerrigan Schultz led the Huskies in assists with 23, while junior Sophia Potter added 15. Senior Joslyn Schrank tailed 25 digs, while Kotas had 13 digs and 11 kills. Senior Vanessa Hofer also added 11 digs for the Huskies while junior Haley Schulz finished with 10 kills.

“It was a close loss to a good team,” head coach Mary Ernster said. “We played hard, just couldn’t string the points together in the last set.  I was proud of how the girls fought back from a 0-2 deficit to make it a 5-set match. It showed a lot of fight.”

For Avon, senior Lauren Sees had a team-high of 27 digs and 10 kills, while senior KaCee Zacharias added 18 digs and 17 kills.
Junior Madisyn Cameron and freshman Katie Gretschmann pitched in 26 digs apiece and sophomore Natalie Zacharias tossed in 21 digs. Cameron also dished out 41 assists in the win.

With the loss, the Huskies’ record fell to 13-6. The next game is Friday, Oct.19 in Forestburg against SCW.
