Huskies Hunt Down Pheasants at Pentagon

By Joslyn Schrank on December 27, 2018
Huskies girls basketball traveled to Sioux Falls Sat. December 15, to compete in the Edith Sanford Breast Center Girls Pentagon Classic. They were matched up with the “class A” Parker Pheasants. They managed to defeat the Pheasants, 65-58, making their record 3-1.

“Right away, I thought we started out a little slow,” senior Abigal Arend said, “I thought we didn’t come ready to play and we were nervous for the game, considering they are a class A team. As the game progressed, Julia started nailing some threes which allowed us to stay with them. When we entered the locker room during half-time, we were up by three. Stepping out onto the court after half-time, I kept telling the girls that we just needed to keep the lead and that is just what we did. Our teamwork and determination to win that game, with the help of our Lord and Savior, allowed us to come out on top.”

To start off the game, junior Kennedee Weber jumped to allow the Huskies to win first possession of the game. The Pheasants started out hot, cashing three-points left and right, but the Huskies didn’t back down, trailing right behind the Pheasants to end the first quarter 15-19.

“I was a little nervous about what the coaches were going to say about the first quarter heading into the locker room at half-time because we were not ready to play and gave up many points,” Kennedee Weber said. “I knew that rebounding was going to be one of the topics that we were going to talk about because we didn’t have many girls crashing the boards and being aggressive. I was hoping the coaches’ half-time talk would help us step up in the second half to put out a win.”

The Huskies continued to fight throughout the second quarter, allowing them to stick with the Pheasants. As the Huskies started to settle down and become more comfortable with the game, they took the lead as they headed into the locker room 35-32.

Throughout the third and fourth quarter, the Huskies continued to fight and lead against the Pheasants. The Huskies determination and drive allowed them to keep pushing forth with points and taking care of business on the defensive side of things. The final score of the game was 65-58.

“I feel like our upcoming season will be something to look forward to,” freshman Julia Weber said, “Even though we were down by a lot in the first quarter against Parker, we still came back and pulled through. That shows people when we play as a team, everything seems to improve on the court. I think beating an “A” school is a boost of confidence for the upcoming season.”

Stats for the game included Julia Weber with 28 points and nine steals. Sophomore Kerrigan Schultz added 19 points for the Huskies, along with six rebounds. Seniors Abigal Arend added 13 points offensively while Jada Wethor pitched in six rebounds.
