Bridgewater-Emery girls basketball team faced the Viborg-Hurley Cougars Tuesday, Dec. 12. After the Huskies were down by more than ten points, they came back and gave the Cougars a run for their money, just falling short by two points 55-57.
“We played hard and fought through the tough areas, we just had a few too many mistakes where they used that opportunity to cash three-pointers, which held us back from coming out on top,” Senior Jada Wethor said.
The Huskies started out by playing defense against the Cougars. The Huskies were leading 5-0 but then allowed the Cougars to catch up tying it 5-5. The Huskies and Cougars continued to battle point for point for the first quarter. During the second quarter, the Huskies continued to score, along with the Cougars, but the opposing team started to pull ahead. The opposing team continued to pull ahead throughout the third and fourth quarter. With about four minutes to go, the Huskies started scoring, giving the Cougars a fight for the last few minutes of the game. With one minute to go, the Huskies managed to come within two points of the Cougars but were unable to pull it off.
“I don't think we played our best,” sophomore Kerrigan Schultz said. “We got down by close to 16 points and we keep making it harder for us to battle back. Our defense kind of shut down for a while and we had a lot of turnover. I was proud of the way we fought back at the end and the energy we brought. We just need to continue to play our game and bring energy and not get so down. I'm excited for the rest of the season.”
Schultz led the team offensively with 15 points, followed by senior Abigal Arend with 14. Freshman Julia Weber added 12 points and led the team in steals with five. Wethor led the team defensively with nine rebounds, while Schultz racked up six for the Huskies.
The Huskies play Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Friday, Dec. 21 in a doubleheader with the boys in Forestburg starting at 4 p.m.
