KILLIN’ IT: Junior Katelyn Kotas runs her approach in attempt to kill the ball on Sept. 12 in Emery. Bridgewater-Emery Huskies played the Freeman flyers, losing in a close five set match. “I think we could have won if we didn’t get so down on ourselves in the fourth set. We played hard and strong throughout the rest, however, so this loss is just going to make us stronger,” Junior Jada Wethor and outside hitter said.
Emery’s new gymnasium had one exciting, yet nerve-racking night on Sept. 12 while hosting the Freeman Flyers (7-2). Before falling short to the Flyers, the Huskies had a record of 3-2. Their first game against MCM was a loss as well as MVP. The Huskies have defeated Tripp/Delmont/Armour, Menno and Irene/Wakonda.
“So far, the season has been going well. We have lost to two teams, who were both class A. Two of our hardest games are always at the beginning of the season, but it only makes us better and gives an outlook on what we need to work on,” Katelyn Kotas, outside hitter/defensive specialist, said.
The Bridgewater-Emery Huskies fell short of the victory against the Freeman Flyers on Tuesday, September 12. The Huskies put up a fight, however, the Flyers into 5 sets. In the first set, the Flyers pulled ahead quite a bit, but the Huskies managed to refocus their minds on the game and come back only to lose by seven points. In the second and third sets, the Huskies managed to come out on top with lots of communication, confidence and mental focus and won both with a 22-25 and 23-25 score. The fourth set took lots of determination and communication, but the Huskies seemed to lack those two qualities from time to time and lost the fourth set with 25-18. The Flyers took the Huskies into a fifth set. Starting the fifth set, the Huskies brought forth communication and mental toughness. They knew what they needed to do to take the victory, but the Flyers did too. The Huskies fought hard and went point for point with the Flyers, but in the end, the Flyers managed to take charge and finish the game 17-15.
“Even though that game ended in a loss, it made us grow as a team. Everyone made a couple of simple mistakes, but now we know what we need to work on. Staying focused and bringing continuous energy to the court is something that helps your overall performance. Altogether, we played well,” Sydney Hoffman said.
Sydney Hoffman managed to roundup eight kills and five blocks, while Katelyn Kotas racked up 27 digs, five kills and one ace. Joslyn Schrank added 21 digs for the Huskies. Libby Bailey pitched in eleven digs and 2 aces, while Sophia Potter helped with 17 assists and seven digs.
“We know what we are capable of, we just need to cut down on our little errors,” Sydney Hoffman said. “We have a great volleyball program here at B-E and I am excited to see what the rest of our season has in store.”
After falling short to the Flyers, the Huskies held a record of 3-3.
Later that week, on Thursday, Sept. 14, the Huskies defeated the Viborg-Hurley Cougars in three sets.
Senior Libby Bailey, libero/defensive specialist, said, “It was an awesome feeling to sweep a team in three, but I think that we could have used a little more focus and energy on the court. It was boring at times, but it was a great practice to try new things.”
Stats for the three-set win against the Cougars consisted of Sydney Hoffman with twelve kills, Libby Bailey with twelve digs and two aces and Katelyn Kotas with five kills and eleven digs.
After defeating the Cougars, the Bridgewater-Emery Huskies held a 4-3 record.
