Huskies Defend SoDak 16 Qualifier Title
By Joslyn Schrank on November 5, 2018
Bridgewater-Emery Huskies defeated the Menno Wolves to advance to the SoDak 16, Thursday, Nov. 1. The Huskies overcame the Wolves in four sets: 25-14, 23-25, 25-13 and 25-16. With the win, the Huskies once again, are one of the two teams to advance from the Region 5B Volleyball Tournament for a chance at advancing to state.
“It was a pretty amazing feeling advancing back to the SoDak 16,” sophomore Kerrigan Schultz said. “Beating a team three times in one season is hard, yet we did it! I thought we played hard and aggressive the whole game. We just need to keep accomplishing our goal, and our team is not one to give up or not put up a fight. I cannot wait to see what we can do in the SoDak 16 game against Faith.”
B-E kept the momentum going for the most part, only letting one set slip away to the Wolves. The Huskies kept the Wolves at 14 the first set. Throughout the second set, the Huskies’ allowed the Wolves to rack up too many points, which didn’t give the Huskies enough room to catch back up. However, the Huskies shook off the second set and came out with energy the third set, taking the set away from the Wolves 25-13. The Huskies’ refocus on the game allowed B-E to take the fourth set, finalizing the game.
“My overall thoughts were that we came ready to play because we knew what was at stake,” junior Haley Schulz said. “We knew we had a lot to lose being the number one seed in our region; whereas, Menno was the fifth seed, so they were just going to go out and play their game and if they won, they won. We brought a lot of energy and excitement onto the court. I think we need to continue that whether we are ahead or behind. I hope we can bring that same excitement and energy on Tuesday.”
Up at the net, senior Sydney Hoffman had 13 kills, along with one ace serve and block. Schulz pitched in ten kills and two blocks at the net. Juniors Kennedee Weber added eight kills and seven digs, while Sophia Potter contributed 19 assists, six digs and one ace serve. Schultz pitched in 25 assists and four aces for the Huskies. Senior Katelyn Kotas added to both the offense and defensive side of things, contributing 15 digs and nine kills. Defensively, senior Joslyn Schrank added 21 digs along with two ace serves for the B-E Huskies.
“We played with a lot of teamwork and energy against Menno,” Weber said. “As we look forward to playing Faith, I think one of the biggest things we need to bring is being on our toes, ready for the ball to come over the net at any time. We also need to continue to bring energy throughout the entire game, whether we are winning or losing at that given point in the game.”
The Huskies traveled to Wall Tuesday Nov. 6, to play the Faith Lady Longhorns.
