Huskies traveled to Marion Monday, Jan. 17, to face the Freeman Academy/Marion Bearcats. The Huskies defeated the Bearcats 76-32, winning by more than 40 points.
“I think we played well,” senior Abigal Arend said. “We pushed the ball along with good ball movement. We also rebounded well and kept the turnovers lower than we normally do. Our energy was great, also playing as a team and talking. We definitely came out hard, not overlooking the Bearcats.”
The Huskies started out with a bang, holding the Bearcats to five points while the girls scored 32 in the first quarter. The Lady Huskies continued to push forth, ending the second quarter ahead by more than 40, 61-14. Coming out after half time, the Huskies started off a little slow, only scoring seven points in the third quarter. The score to end the third was 68-19, Huskies still leading by more than 40 points. The Huskies managed to score eight points in the fourth but allowed the Bearcats to score 13 points. The junior varsity went in halfway through the fourth quarter, holding the Bearcats’ starters well. The final score of the game was 76-32.
“I thought we played very well, freshman Chloe Schmitt said. “We moved the ball around until we got the shot we wanted. We boxed out very well which helped us have more opportunities to score. Our shots were falling so that boosted our confidence to keep pushing until the end of the game. Overall, we played together, and it was a great team win!”
Leading offensively for the Huskies was Arend with 20 points and five assists, while freshman Julia Weber pitched in 17 points and five assists. Sophomore Kerrigan Schultz contributed doubles, 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Huskies along with five assists. Senior Jada Wethor led the Huskies defensively with 13 rebounds, while junior Kennedee Weber added 11 points for the Huskies.
“I think our team has come a long way from our first game of the season,” assistant coach Chris Schmitt said, “We are pushing the pace and getting up and down the floor quicker. We really showed against FA/M just how well we get out in the fast break and score. Putting up 61 points in the first half shows what this team is capable of offensively. As for the remainder of the regular season, a big focus area will be our defense. We’d like to win out the balance of our games and keep the momentum going into the postseason. Overall, I am very pleased and proud of the effort our girls bring to the court every night.”
The win over the Bearcats allowed the Huskies’ record to better, 11-2, making the Bearcats 2-11.
