Huskie Boys’ Victory over Freeman Flyers
By Joslyn Schrank on January 19, 2018
The Bridgewater-Emery Huskies came out strong after two tough losses in the Mike Miller Classic. The Huskie boys may have lost to two very talented teams with a height advantage, but that did not stop the Huskies from starting their winning streak again. The Huskies played the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks Jan. 2 and defeated them 70-49. Additionally, the Huskies defeated the Freeman Flyers 92-57 Fri., Jan. 5.
“In the first half, we lacked [the] energy to play defense. We were getting out-played. Going into the second half, we played better defense. We had more energy and fire. I just reminded myself that it’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish,” junior Sawyer Schultz said.
To start the game off, Sawyer Schultz jumped to get the Huskies possession of the ball. A shot was put up but did not go in.
The score stayed close the whole first quarter. When the Huskies scored, the Flyers managed to do so as well. Not much seemed to be falling for the Huskies, but they still managed to work hard and keep the lead. Junior Jamin Arend had four points, and junior Carter Dye had five. Both junior Sawyer Schultz and senior Mason Potter added two points. The Huskies lead 13-12 to end the first quarter.
The Huskies started with the ball to start off the second quarter. Throughout the quarter, the shots started falling a little but not much more than the first quarter. Schultz managed to cash three three-pointers and a two-point basket. Arend and Dye each added three points while senior Duot Van Sickle added four. The Huskies managed to have their fouls under control, only fouling six times, thus, the Flyers did not go into bonus the first half. The Huskies managed to hold onto their lead going into halftime with a score of 34-32.
“We came out a little slow, but after the first have we started making our shots and playing as a team, and we ended up pulling out a win,” Potter said.
The Flyers started with the ball but missed which gave the Huskies possession, which they used against the Flyers. After halftime, the Huskies boys came out and dominated, scoring a total of 38 points in the 3rd quarter. Their shots were falling and they were executing every play. Schultz racked up 13 points including a dunk. Seniors Mason Potter added a three-pointer, Dustin Weber with a steal and a bonus of one point and Duot VanSickle with six points. Arend added four points out of his five attempts at free throws. Dye added 11 points for the Huskies in the 3rd quarter. The Huskies went into bonus due to the Flyers racking up seven fouls. The Huskies came out hard and scored 38 points in the 3rd quarter, thus making the score 72-45 going into the 4th quarter.
The Huskies kept pushing throughout the 4th quarter, scoring 20 points and holding the Flyers to score a total of 12 points.
The Huskies led the Flyers into bonus due to the Huskies adding four fouls to their existing four fouls from the 3rd quarter. Arend added two points while Dye added three points. Senior Bradlee Schultz added two points while Schultz added eight points. Sophomore Chase Arend pitched in a three-pointer.
The leading scorer of the game was Schultz with 36 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Dye added 22 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals. Jamin Arend contributed 13 points, six rebounds, five steals and six assists. VanSickle pitched in ten points for the Huskies.

The ending score of the game was 92-57, to make the Huskies 5-2.
