Huskie Boys Defeat Canistota Hawks

Bridgewater-Emery Huskie boys defeated the Canistota Hawks 64-45 Tuesday, Dec. 18.
“We started the game off slow, but we came out stronger in the second half,” senior Carter Dye said. “We tried to find the open guy on offense and we really started to focus on getting the rebounds on defense. It’s was a nice conference win for us to get.”
The Huskies started off the game against the Hawks slow with scoring 17-13 in the first quarter. The Huskies battled back and forth with the Hawks until halftime. The score going into half time was 35-26. The Huskie boys came out in the second half much more prepared. They picked it up on the defensive side getting rebounds and stopped turning over the ball. The score in the third quarter was 52-34. The Huskie boys preserved making the final score 64-45.
“They were making the majority of their shots, so we had to pick it up on the defensive side,” junior Jonah Hofer said. “We were giving them too many second chances, and had to start playing good Huskie defense.”
For the Huskies, senior Sawyer Schultz lead the team with 19 points, three rebounds, one steal and one block and Hofer finished with 17 points going eight for eight from the field. Senior Jamin Arend added 11 points and eight rebounds, while Dye contributed ten points and 15 rebounds.
Leading the Hawks was sophomores Tyce Ortman with 14 points and Cole Papendick with 12 points. Junior Jare Tieszen grabbed eight rebounds.
“Canistota is always a tough place to play and we knew it’d be a tough one going in,” Arend said. “We had a great third quarter push outscoring them 17 to eight to help us get the win.”
As a team, the Huskies made 24 of 50 for 48 percent from the field and went nine for ten for 90 percent from the line. The Huskies out rebounded Canistota 36 to 33. The Huskies also had three blocks and eight steals.
Bridgewater-Emery Huskie boys’ record is 2-0. They will play in the Mike Miller Classic ath the Corn Palace in Mitchell. They play Breckenridge, MN Friday, Dec. 28 at 5 p.m. and Tea Area Saturday, Dec. 29 at 6:30 p.m.
