Huskie Boys and Girls Defeat Colman-Egan

Bridgewater-Emery Huskie boys and girls persevered passed the Colman-Egan Hawks on Saturday, Jan. 5. The varsity boys final score was 82-57 and varsity girls finished with a 57-52 win.
“We started off slow in the first quarter, but we put up quite a few shots in the second quarter letting us come out ahead,” senior Sawyer Schultz said. “The second half we kept working leading us to a great win.”
The varsity boys started the night off finishing with an 82-57 victory. The first quarter ended 15-15. The Huskies put up an inspiring 27 points in the second quarter making the score 42-28 going into half time. The Huskie boys came out strong in the second half scoring 21 points making the score at the end of the third quarter 63-43. The final score was 82-57.
“Overall it was a great Huskie win against the Hawks,” senior Jamin Arend said. “We really played as a team this game and tried to find the open man to score for us. We have to take each game one at a time to help us get where we want to be at the end of the season.”
The Huskie seniors lead the way scoring double digits. Schultz led the team with 35 points and Arend followed with 19 points. Senior Carter Dye contributed 12 points and junior Jonah Hofer pitched in six points. Junior Chase Arend had four points, three rebounds and four steals. The Huskies finished defensively with 25 rebounds (6 offensive/ 19 defensive), two blocks, and 15 steals.
The varsity girls finished the night with a 57-52 Huskie victory. The lady Huskies got behind early in the game, the score going into half time was 16-20. In the third quarter, the Huskies got down by 14 points, but they picked it up and made a comeback to come within four points going into the fourth quarter. The Huskies finished the game strong with putting up 23 points in the final quarter. The final score was 57-52.
“We did not have a great start in the first half,” head coach Jessie VanLeur said. “We dug ourselves a hole in the third quarter and I was proud of the way the girls got themselves out of it.”
Senior Abigal Arend led the team with 21 points and freshman Julia Weber added 12 points. Sophomore Kerrigan Schultz contributed a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Jada Wethor also grabbed seven rebounds.
“We started the game off slow and got behind in the first half of the game,” Arend said. “After halftime, we came out with the determination to win the game and we did just that. As a team, we know where we want to be at the end of the season, and we strive to be a better team walking off the court than when we walked on the court at the end of the game.”
As a team, the Huskies were 20 of 50 from the field for 40 percent. They shot 75 percent making 12 of 16 free throws. The Huskies finished the game with 35 rebounds, 13 assists and seven steals.
“It was a tough game,” Kerrigan Schultz said. “The first half was rough for us, but in the second half we pulled it together and started playing as a team. We picked it up on the defensive side and scoring in the last quarter was huge for the Huskie win.”
With the victories, the Huskie boys improved their record to 7-1 and the girls improved their record to 6-1.
