Bridgewater Emery girls basketball team took on the conference and region rivals Freeman Flyers Thursday, Jan. 3. The Huskies came out with a win of 67-63.
“I was very proud of the girls’ effort,” head coach Jessie VanLeur said. “Freeman is a very aggressive team, so we really focused on lowering our turnovers and take over the game right away. The girls did a great job of coming out to play right at the start and finishing the game”
The Huskies came out strong in the first quarter talking up the defense and getting good looks on shots, leading 16-12 at the end of the first quarter. The Huskies continued to push the ball and play as a team heading into the locker room at halftime with a lead of 6 points.
“Overall, we did a pretty good job handling the pressure defense,” Freshman Julia Weber said. “We shot the ball well and got their main players in foul trouble. It was a great team win.”
Coming out strong in the third quarter the Huskies knew they couldn’t let downplaying an aggressive team. They continued to push the lead, but in the fourth quarter Freeman was not letting down as they outscored the Huskies 17-13. The Huskies were able to get a stop and pull out a win in regulation.
“It was a really big win for us,” senior guard Abigal Arend said. “I thought we came out right at the tip off with a lot of energy and confidence. That helped us throughout the entire game. We need to continue our teamwork and intensity in order to keep winning games and meeting our goals.”
For Huskies senior Arend led with 26 points while Weber tossed in 20. Kerrigan Schultz also pitched in 10 points and 5 rebounds on the win.
As a team, B-E shot 51 percent from the field making 19 of 37 and were 23 or 28 for 82 percent from the free throw line. The team had 30 rebounds, ten assists and five steals.
The Huskies improved their record to 5-1 and 2-1 in the Cornbelt Conference. Next, they play Menno Thursday, Jan. 10 in Menno. The junior varsity will start at 6:15 p.m. followed by the varsity.
