Homecoming Ends with a Seahawk Victory
By Joslyn Schrank on October 3, 2018
Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan Seahawks take yet another victory against the Flandreau Fliers, 55-6 Friday, Sept. 21. The victory made the Seahawks’ record 5-0.
To start of the first quarter, the Seahawks’ junior Brady Hawkins kicked. The Seahawks defense held the Fliers to zero points. The Seahawks were able to score three touchdowns, all with a PAT (point after touchdown) by Hawkins. Senior Jamin Arend scored two, a 65 yard punt return and a 3 yard run, and Hawkins scored the other touchdown, a 17 yard run, of the quarter. The score to end the first quarter was 21-0.
“We were big, but they were bigger, the size truly does not matter,” senior Carter Dye said.
Throughout the second quarter, the Seahawks managed to keep the Fliers at zero, while scoring another three touchdowns. Arend had another punt return, this time for 73 yards and had a 34 yard run. Hawkins scored the other touchdown on a 40 yard run. Hawkins made two out of the three PATs. The score going into halftime was 41-0.
“We played well, doing many things right,” senior Sawyer Schultz said. “We ran the ball well and had lots of good tackles. We really need to carry over the things we did well against Flandreau into the game against Canton.”
The third quarter started out with the Fliers kicking and the Seahawks receiving. The Seahawks continued to push forward, gaining yards and first downs. Defense wise, the Seahawks continued to hold the Fliers at 0. Sophomore Rylee Schultz recovered a fumble in the end zone, scoring for the Seahawks. The two point conversion failed. The score at the end of the third quarter was 47-0.
“It felt great to get the ‘dub’ the week of homecoming.” junior Jonah Hofer said. “I thought we played well, executing every play and making stops on defense to keep their score low.”
Coach VanLeur put in the JV for the last quarter, allowing them to receive some playing time in varsity. The JV squad only allowed the Fliers to score one touchdown on a 11 yard pass from quarterback Tanner Christenson to Tyler Cain. The PAT was no good. Sophomore Bodie Burnham ran in a 55 yard touchdown, while freshman Koby Kayser pushed forth with a two-point conversion after the touchdown, making the final score 55-6.
“It was great to get some varsity playing time,” Burnham said. “Even though we gave up a touchdown, our JV did pretty well against their 1st string.”
Stats for the game consisted of Burnham with 70 rushing yards on 8 carries and Hawkins with 59 rushing yards on 3 carries. Leading on defense was Kayser with 6 tackles and Hawkins with 4. The Seahawks finished with 285 total yards on 36 plays.
