January 14, 2019
Both the Bridgewater-Emery girls’ and boys’ basketball teams took on the Ethan Rustlers on Tuesday, Jan. 8. The boys’ defeated the Rustlers with a score of 82-39 while the girls’ fell short with a score of 57-39.
The Huskie boys used a 37-point first quarter to help lift them over the Rustlers, along with shooting 63 percent from the field. Never looking back Huskies were able to more than double the Rustlers score. The Huskies never gave up and continued to run the offense and play aggressive defense.
Sawyer Schultz led the Huskies’ with 27 points on 11 of 15 shooting and four three-pointers. Senior Jamin Arend added 21 points while junior Grant Andrews stepped up to give the Huskies 12 points.
“I thought we played good defense,” head coach Scott Schultz said. “We got to try some new plays and we executed the offense well and I was happy with that. We just need to continue playing Huskie basketball and keep improving to be where we want to be.”
Playing the No. 1 team in class ‘B’ the Huskie girls put up a good hard fight and were within 12 points in the fourth quarter but couldn’t pull within single digits. The Huskies committed 21 turnovers which made the Rustlers go, along with a 1-3-1 defense which threw off the Huskies.
“We knew we had to stop Karly but other players for them went off,” freshman Chloe Schmitt said. “I thought we played aggressively, but we needed to limit our turnover which took us out of the game. I am proud of the way we played against the No.1 team and we never gave up and played until the end.”
Stats for the girls consisted of freshman Julia Weber leading with 11 points along with sophomore Kerrigan Schultz and senior Abigal Arend adding seven. Senior Jada Wethor grabbed eight rebounds.
