Bridgewater-Emery girls took down conference and region rival Canistota Hawks Friday, Dec. 14. The Huskies won with a score of 64-37.
“I was very proud of how the girls came out ready to play after coming off a tough loss from Viborg-Hurley,” head coach Jessie VanLeur said. “Second half we did a great job defensively of shutting down their top players and capitalizing on their mistakes.”
The Huskies started off strong but the Hawks kept battling point for point with the score of 28-22 going into halftime. Coming out in the third quarter the Huskies kept pushing and outscored the Hawks 20 points to 7 in the 3rd quarter. This gave the Huskies a bigger lead but were still not going to let down.
“Overall, I thought we played well,” freshman Chloe Schmitt said. “We had a balanced attack with three girls scoring in double digits and we held one of their best players to less than ten points. Our defense definitely helped us win that game.”
Senior guard Abigal Arend led the Huskies with 18 points while freshman Julia Weber dished in 15. Weber also helped defensively with 5 rebounds along with senior Jada Wethor. Sophomore Kerrigan Schultz also pitched in 5 rebounds and 11 points.
“We came out ready because we knew it was a big game,” Abigal Arend said. “I thought all the girls stepped up. It was a great team effort and I’m excited to see what we are able to do the rest of the season.”
As a team, the Huskies made 24 of 47 for 51 percent from the field and 11 of 13 for 85 percent from the free throw line. The team finished with 29 rebounds, 18 steals and 14 assists.
The Huskies improved their record to 2-1 and 1-1 in the conference.
