CTE Monthly

By Kristin Kotas on October 1, 2018
CTE? CTSO? I don’t even know.

What is CTE?

CTE stands for Career and Technical Education. Over seven million high school students are active in CTE classes nationwide, according to Applied Educational Systems. Career and Technical Education currently has 16 career clusters, ranging from Business Management & Administration to Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics.

How are CTE classes different from traditional classes?

Career and Technical Education classes prepare students with both technical and academic skills, along with relative knowledge and training, for their future careers. At Bridgewater-Emery, we offer Agriculture, Business, Computer Studies, FACS (Family and Consumer Sciences), and Industrial Arts classes.

What is CTSO?

CTSO breaks down into Career and Technical Student Organizations, defining the student organizations that pair with CTE classes. Examples of these at Bridgewater-Emery include FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America), FFA (National FFA Organization), and HOSA (HOSA-Future Health Professionals).

What are the benefits of CTE classes?

According to AESeducation, 45% of CTE students say it used real-world examples to help them understand classwork. Benefits of CTE classes include a development of employability knowledge, gaining job-specific skill sets, and students who are active in CTEs are more likely to achieve in other areas of their academics (Wisconsin Technical Colleges).

For me personally, CTE classes have given me so many leadership opportunities ranging from mock-interviews, to holding officer positions, to learning entrepreneurship and business skills. I encourage all students to take at least one of the many CTE classes that is offered at B-E.
