Change Your World
December 11, 2018
Every week, the Bridgewater-Emery School shows an episode of “The Harbor” by Jostens. This episode allows us, students, to think outside the box on how our actions and words can be negative or positive.
“The Harbor is a great idea that B-E has incorporated this school year,” Mrs. Fisher said. “I’ve seen students apply different things they’ve learned from these videos in their daily lives at school.”
The Harbor by Jostens is a free educational video resource for schools that provide students with real perspectives from real people that will help them achieve greater success in the outside world. The Harbor, featuring Mike Smith and guests, facilitates the teaching of character development in classrooms by showcasing tangible life lessons through a school years’ worth of episodes with rich, raw and engaging video content. Designed for the classroom, Renaissance member has access to a downloadable critical thinking discussion guide to foster student-led discussions for each episode.
“For me, the Harbor has made an impact in different ways I never really thought about,” sophomore Kerrigan Schultz stated,
“Something so simple, like putting your phone down when with friends, can be so challenging for most of us; however, it’s a challenge I, and hopefully many others, want to conquer.”
This last week’s topic was “Everyone Matters.” This episode talked about those who want to start something incredible, make it happen by starting little. We, as humans, passed people in public, school, work and think to ourselves “Wow, I would hate to be that person,” instead of reaching out to him/her. People tend to think they are better than those who wear different styles, are interested in different hobbies, appear or act differently. The video implied that those things should not matter to us.
“I think that it is important to learn life lessons, character, and how to treat others,” senior Vanessa Hofer stated, “I know the Harbor has helped me put things into perspective and challenge me in many different ways.”
As Mike Smith stated in the video, “Befriending someone can change your life. I thought I would help that person, but that person helped me.” The Harbor encourage each and every one of us at Bridgewater-Emery to step out of our comfort zone and introduce ourselves to one who we normally don’t associate with.
