Canton C Hawks Break BEE Seahawks Winning Streak
By Kerrigan Schultz on October 10, 2018
Number one ranked Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan Seahawks fell to number two Canton C-Hawks 17-24 Friday, Sept. 28. This was the Seahawks first loss of the season.
“I thought our boys fought hard,” head coach Jeff VanLeur said. “We had a few penalties that ended up being drive killers. It’s something we need to work on and improve. We also needed to make a few big plays in the fourth quarter. I thought Canton did a nice job of making plays when they had to have one. I know our team will take this loss in a positive way and we’ll come back a better football team.”
Canton started the night off with an 83-yard kickoff return by junior Kayden Verley adding a PAT, making the first quarter score 0-7. In the second quarter, BEE held Canton to one 19 yard field goal made by Verley and BEE was able to score two touchdowns and one field goal. The Seahawks scored on a 72-yard pass from junior Brady Hawkins to Chase Arend and a 26-yard pass from Hawkins to senior Sawyer Schultz. PAT was good from Hawkins both times. Hawkins also made a 20-yard field goal before half making the score 17-10, in favor of the Seahawks.
Second half was a tough defensive battle from both teams. Canton was able to score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter making the final score 17-24.
“If we could have caught a few more passes and could have got a few more stops on defense the game would have gone in the opposite direction,” junior Chase Arend said. “Overall I think we played a pretty hard game against a good team.”
For the Seahawks, senior running back Jamin Arend rushed for 86 yards on 23 carries. Chase Arend had 72 yards receiving on one attempt and a touchdown for the Seahawks while Schultz added 68 yards receiving on 4 passes, and a touchdown. Hawkins also added 83 yards rushing on eight carries and threw for 154 yards on 12 attempts.
“They had all the momentum going for them because of their homecoming and having a big crowd there,” Jamin Arend said. “It was a very hostile environment and we tried to play our hardest, but the outcome wasn’t what we wanted. Going forward we need to make big plays when needed.”
For the Canton C-hawks Verley recorded 49 rushing yards on 11 attempts. Also for Canton, senior quarterback Scott Peterson recorded 73 yards passing on four attempts. Junior Isaac Dietzenbach added 54 receiving yards to power Canton to stay undefeated.
“We played alright, but we made some mistakes at crucial times,” Schultz said. “We couldn’t get stops at the times we needed them, like when they were within 5 yards of a touchdown.”
With the loss, the Seahawks record fell to 5-1.
