Bridgewater-Emery Transitions into Spring Sports
By Sydney Hoffman on March 29, 2018
As winter begins to wind down and basketball comes to an end, spring sports begin. B-E students have the option to go out for either track or golf.
After the Bridgewater-Emery boys’ basketball team returned from the state tournament, some players had only one day to rest until track started Mar. 19. This track season will be missing five seniors that graduated last year, one of which qualified for state. These seniors included Jacob Eddy, Becca Letcher, Brittany Heezen, Miah Schallenkamp and Autumn Hilton.
Last track season, B-E qualified in 400 meter relay (Cole Gassman, Dustin Weber, Jamin Arend and Sawyer Schultz), sprint medley (Cole Gassman, Jacob Eddy, Jamin Arend and Sawyer Schultz), 1600 meter relay (Jacob Eddy, Dustin Weber, Jamin Arend and Sawyer Schultz), 110/300 meter hurdles (Jacob Eddy), long jump (Dustin Weber and Kennedee Weber), 800 meter relay (Cole Gassman, Dustin Weber, Jamin Arend and Sawyer Schultz) and sprint medley (Kristin Kotas, Joslyn Schrank, Julia Weber and Joslyn Schrank). Alternates at the state meet included Chase Arend, Jevin Eddy, Brittany Heezen, Miah Schallenkamp and Taylor Schallenkamp. Many past state qualifiers will have a chance to qualify again, as many relay teams have most of their players returning this year.
“My goal is to qualify for state this year since I was so close last year as an alternate,” sophomore Chase Arend said.
The first varsity track meet will be Apr. 3 at Scotland.
As for the varsity golf team, they lost Danielle Vinz and Peyton Bailey who were seniors last year. Both qualified for the state golf meet last year and were very good all-around players. Returning golf players include Darby Hurd, Sydney Hoffman and Shaylee Longe for the girls’ team and Matt Randall for the boys’ team. Practice for the golf team started Thursday, Mar. 29.
“I am most looking forward to getting back out on the course in competitive tournaments this season. I am hoping to get a varsity team together so that we have enough scores to compete for team titles,” senior Matt Randall said.
The first varsity golf meet will be Apr. 12 in Yankton at the Fox Run course.
