Bridgewater-Emery Oral Interpretation team competed at the district competition Oct. 30 in Mitchell. Two competitors advanced to the region competition in their respective categories: senior Mercedes Mesman in Oratory and junior Lindsey Weeldreyer in Humorous.
“I have participated in high school oral interpretation for the last three years, and Humorous has been my favorite category,” Weeldreyer said. “I just really enjoy making people laugh.” I enjoy competing each year, but I also love hearing everyone else’s pieces in each category.”
Oral Interpretation is a competitive activity offered at many schools. To be successful in competition, the competitor must bring the story to life by giving dimension to his/her voice and body.
The Oral Interpretation season began with the local competition at the Bridgewater-Emery High School Oct. 17. The following students competed at the local competition: senior Joslyn Schrank in Poetry with her piece “There is Hope,” freshman Sophia Robocker in Serious with her piece “Amanda,” Mesman in Oratory with her piece “Listen to This When You’re Feeling Unappreciated,” Weeldreyer in Humorous with her piece “Infomercial,” junior Katrina Weber in Humorous with her piece “Get Your Stupid On” and the Readers’ Theater group consisting of Mesman, Weeldreyer, sophomore Tyler Kjetland and sophomore Rylee Schultz with their piece “He Won’t Quit Smoking.”
Schrank, Robocker, Mesman, Weeldreyer, and the Readers’ Theater group moved onto the district competition.
“I wanted to do oral interpretation to improve my public speaking and to be more involved,” Robocker said. “It is another thing to add to my resume later on in life. I really enjoyed the experience and I can’t wait to participate in it again next year.”
Mesman and Weeldreyer then placed at the district competition, advancing themselves to the region competition. If they place in the top three at regions, they will advance to the state competition Nov. 30-Dec. 1 in Watertown.
