B-E HOSA Prepares to Compete at State Competition
By Sydney Hoffman on March 19, 2019
State HOSA takes place March 28-29 at the Sanford Pentagon facility in Sioux Falls. Four B-E students will complete either at the event or prior to the event via an online proctored test.
HOSA stands for Health Occupations Students of America. This is a national organization for students interested in health occupations. The state competition events are designed to test knowledge as well as hands-on skills. There are numerous competition events under six broader categories which include Health Science Events, Health Professions Events, Emergency Preparedness Events, Leadership Events, Teamwork Events and Recognition Events.
“HOSA allows you to learn more about the different health career occupations and options as well as gain hands-on experience,” HOSA advisor and high school science teacher Whitney Fisher said. “This organization help students figure out which career is right, or not right, for them.”
Senior Sydney Hoffman completed the Nutrition test, senior Katelyn Kotas completed the Human Development and Growth test, senior Kristin Kotas completed the Medical Law and Ethics test and senior Sarah Schultz completed the Nursing Assisting test. Schultz’s competition will also involve an evaluation of hands-on nursing assistant tasks at the state competition.
“This event interests me because it directly relates to my current job as a CNA at the Diamond Care Center as well as my future plans of becoming a nurse, in which I plan to attend SDSU for that degree,” Schultz said.
Junior Kennedee Weber will also attend the state competition to participate in tours and workshops.
If an individual student or team receives one of the top three placings announced at the banquet March 29, then they will continue onto the International Leadership Conference June 19-22 in Orlando, Florida this year.
