Bridgewater-Emery FFA Prepares for Career Development Events

By Sydney Hoffman on March 11, 2019
B-E FFA has upcoming CDEs throughout the month of March leading up to the South Dakota FFA State Convention April 7-9 at SDSU campus in Brookings.

“I participated in the Nursey Landscape CDE for two years in Parker, and now I am going to do it again this year at Bridgewater-Emery,” senior Nick Thon said. “I like the contest because it is relevant to real-world experiences and my interests. I enjoy the competitions because I like to meet new people and get closer with my team.”

Career Development Events (CDE) help FFA members develop the abilities to think critically, communicate clearly and perform effectively in a competitive job market. This term is often used to describe the type of contest and the competition practice day itself. CDEs take place in the spring, whereas, LDEs, or Leadership Development Events, take place in the fall.

There are 15 CDEs to choose from in South Dakota: Agriculture Business Management, Agriculture Mechanics, Agronomy, Dairy Cattle Judging, Floriculture, Food Science and Technology, Horse Evaluation and Selection, Livestock Evaluation, Meats Evaluation and Technology, Milk Quality and Products, Natural Resources, Nursey Landscape, Poultry Evaluation, Range Plant ID and Vet Science. Bridgewater-Emery has ten teams currently studying for competition. These teams are subject to change throughout the CDE season.

To prepare for the state convention, different schools around the state put on practice competitions that run exactly as the state would. B-E teams went to Platte March 12 and are going to Tri-Valley March 18, Flandreau March 21 and Lennox March 28. One B-E team, Nursey Landscape, is also going to Howard April 2 after it was moved from March 13 because of anticipated weather conflicts.

“I thought nationals was an awesome experience, as well as the CDE I completed in, Milk Quality and Products, senior Joslyn Schrank said. “I enjoyed competing in this because of what it all entailed; however, once you’ve won state and gone to nationals, you can no longer compete in that same CDE. I’m really excited to be competing in Food Science this year, and I encourage all students to participate in FFA CDEs and LDEs.”

After CDE season, the next B-E FFA event is the end-of-the-year banquet taking place in the Emery multipurpose room May 6.
