Bridgewater-Emery FFA Gives Back
By Sydney Hoffman on February 8, 2018
The FFA motto is “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve.” The Bridgewater-Emery Chapter fulfilled the last portion of the motto Jan. 30 at an FFA meeting. Members braided dog toys and made dog treats to donate to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society.
“Servant leadership is a key component of FFA membership. As a chapter, we are focusing on building more opportunities for members to have a positive impact on their community in our Program of Activities. It is important for our members to have opportunities to serve and help others. Although making the dog treats and toys was a simple project, it was great to see members working together and helping an organization in our area,” advisor Karen Roudabush said.
The meeting began at 7 p.m. and took place in the multipurpose room in Emery. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by junior and secretary Sydney Hoffman. At the last meeting, new members were properly awarded their FFA jackets in a ceremony, all the members learned the rules of proper dinner etiquette and then signed a pledge to a week of thanks, in which they each wrote down a task to complete out of gratitude for school staff and community members.
Senior Dustin Weber gave the reporter’s report, demonstrating our chapter’s recent activities. The Bridgewater-Emery FFA
Chapter has recently been recognized a couple different occasions within the “Farming Families of Davison County” magazine. Its first article highlighted the chapter’s Super Sandwich Showdown competition win that took place in Mitchell, where FFA members Jessica Jaeger and Kori Heezen represented the chapter in making a legen-“dairy” sandwich. Its second article highlighted three FFA chapters sending students to challenge their brains at Escape 605, where two B-E members from each grade worked together to solve clues and riddles to escape the themed room within an hour’s time.
Junior Kristin Kotas gave the Treasurer’s report. Without having a number totaled, it was reported the Davison-Hanson County Farm Bureau donated $300 for the Super Sandwich Showdown that took place, and the chapter also received a $1,000 check donated by Dakota Access Pipeline upon the chapter’s choice of use. It is undetermined what all the money will be used for, but it is planned to be broken up into multiple uses. One of those uses consisted of a community service project following the meeting that night.
Using different colors of fabrics, members cut, tied, braided and tied again to make 44 dog toys to be donated. Along with toys, members also helped create dog treats. Upon purchasing dog biscuits, members melted almond bark and dipped the biscuit in it to create a sweet treat for the less fortunate dogs in the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society.
“I enjoyed making the dog treats and toys because of the impact it will have on the suffering animals. As a first-year member, I enjoyed having community service built into the meeting because it was interactive. I also enjoyed the popsicles at the end of the meeting,” Senior Andrea Gorriz said.
Upcoming FFA events will be taking place during FFA week Feb. 17-24 consisting of high school dress-up days, a pancake feed Feb. 22, a lock-in Feb. 23 and activities for the elementary and middle school
