FUTURE LEADERS: B-E FFA members Jada Wethor, Matt Randall, Sydney Hoffman, Jevin Eddy, Darby Hurd, Rebecka Hoffman, Jasmine Tschetter, Katelyn Kotas, Lindsey Berg, Kristin Kotas, Libby Bailey and Kinzer Glanzer attend the leadership development event competition at Mitchell Technical Institute Nov. 13. Libby Bailey, Sydney Hoffman, Katelyn Kotas, Kristin Kotas and Jada Wethor advanced to the state competition Dec. 3-4.
Leadership development events focus on creating situations for members to demonstrate their abilities in public speaking, decision making, communication and their knowledge of agriculture and the FFA organization. Team and individual events are used to reinforce what is taught in agricultural science classrooms.
A select number of Bridgewater-Emery FFA students have been working on their desired event for the past few months. They competed at the Mitchell Technical Institute Nov. 13 along with other schools within FFA district IV.
“This was my first FFA competition. It was very different than events I had previously been to in other organizations. Everyone was very outgoing and friendly. It was intimidating at first because I was so unfamiliar with the event, but overall I really enjoyed the experience,” senior Libby Bailey said.
Jevin Eddy, Matt Randall and Kinzer Glanzer attended to help contribute to the packing of 46,000 meals. Katelyn and Kristin Kotas and Jada Wethor competed in Agriculture Marketing with their t-shirt company product. Lindsey Berg and Darby Hurd competed in Agriculture Broadcasting, where they place given information into a radio broadcast and present it like an announcer. Sydney Hoffman and Kristin Kotas competed in extemporaneous speaking, where they draw a topic from a bowl and receive thirty minutes to write a speech based on the topic with information from paper articles brought by the competitor. Rebecka Hoffman and Libby Bailey competed in employability skills, where they completed an application, cover letter and resume along with an executed interview for the agriculture related job that they applied for. Sydney Hoffman competed in prepared public speaking with her speech on agriculture illiteracy. Jasmine Tschetter, Sydney Hoffman and Kristin Kotas also participated in district officer interviews in hopes of receiving a position on the district IV officer team.
“I wasn’t really that nervous because I had three years of experience in my competition, but I still really enjoy it each year,” senior Lindsey Berg said.
B-E’s marketing team won first place in their category. Libby Bailey received second place in employability skills, and Rebecka Hoffman was named as alternate. Sydney Hoffman placed third with her prepared public speech. Kristin Kotas placed first in extemporaneous speaking, and Sydney Hoffman was named as alternate. Lastly, Kristin Kotas received the 2017-2018 District IV Vice President position, and Sydney Hoffman received the 2017-2018 District IV President position, in following her 2016-2017 District IV Secretary position. All South Dakota district officers with come together at Pierre in January for the district officer training and breakfast with our state’s legislators.
“I did not expect to come home with two first places and a district officer position! To be elected as vice president and get to go to state is more than I would have imagined, but this just shows what hard work and dedication can do. I owe it to my teammates and Mrs. Roudabush,” junior Kristin Kotas said.
The top three competitors from each category will compete at South Dakota State Leadership in Pierre Dec. 3-4.
