The South Dakota High School Activities Association hosted its 4th annual State Visual Arts Competition March 15-17. Each year, the location alternates from Rapid City and Sioux Falls, following the State AA Basketball Tournament. This year, State Art was held at the Sioux Falls Convention Center.
“It allows students to express themselves and be recognized for all that they have accomplished. I am really glad that art is now available in our school so that we can compete in this competition,” senior Rebecka Hoffman said.
This was the second year Bridgewater-Emery High School art students took part in State Art. With twelve categories to compete in, Bridgewater-Emery had a student submit a piece to each one. The twelve categories include the following: Drawing, Drawing Colored, Painting (Oil and Acrylic), Painting (Watercolor), Photography, Print Making, 3-Dimensional, Crafts, Traditional Cultural Art, Multi-Media/Graphic Design, Mixed Media and Functional Ceramics.
Forty-one schools across the state submitted over 400 student entries. Entries had to be taken to the Convention Center by Wednesday, March 14. All class judging took place Thursday, March 15 and all entries were then on display beginning from 5 p.m. March 16 through 4:30 p.m. March 17.
Although not required to attend with a submitted entry, there was an awards ceremony Saturday, March 17 at 3 p.m. In this awards ceremony, individual awards were announced as well as team awards. Awards were presented based on school class rank and category.
Finally, the last part of State Art included the students who received the team awards to be presented with their trophies and plaques at half-time of the AA Championship Basketball game Saturday night.
Under the guidance of Bridgewater-Emery’s art teacher Cherie Ramsdell, B-E received eight out of the 12 possible awards. Lindsey Weeldreyer competed in the Drawing category and won first place in Functional Ceramics. Kori Heezen was awarded second place for her Multi-Media/Graphic Design entry and Kennedee Weber won third place with her Painting (Watercolor) piece. Darby Hurd received first place in both Traditional Cultural Art and Photography and also had an entry in Drawing Colored. Jessica Jaeger was entered in Painting (Oil and Acrylic) and won second place in 3-Dimensional. Rebecka Hoffman received first place in Crafts and second place in Mixed Media. McKenzie Kirby also entered a Print Making piece.
“The achievements of the students in the arts provide balance with the rest of the disciplines and offers another avenue for success. I am really happy with the way things turned out and am very proud of the students, especially because this program is so new,” Ramsdell said.
The many awards received by Bridgewater-Emery students contributed to the team score. Bridgewater Emery won this year’s Class B Runner-Up Overall Team Champion Award. Mrs. Ramsdell received the award on behalf of the school during the half-time of the game Saturday night. From Bridgewater-Emery, Darby Hurd and Mrs. Ramsdell were both in attendance to accept the awards.
The State Visual Art Competition is a wonderful opportunity for the recognition of the top high school artists in the state and all they have accomplished.
