By Mercedes Mesman on March 29, 2018
It is that time of the year again when FFA members can compete in Career Development Events (CDE) that cover job skills in everything from communications to mechanics. Some events allow students to compete as individuals, while others allow them to compete in teams.
Bridgewater-Emery FFA brought 11 teams to compete in the District IV CDE in Platte March 13. These included ag mechanics, agronomy, biotechnology, farm business management, floriculture, food science and technology, livestock evaluation, meat evaluation, milk quality and products, natural resources and vet science.
Victories were numerous all around with multiple teams in the top three and individuals in the top five. Second place teams included agronomy, biotechnology, farm business management and floriculture. The two first place teams were food science and technology and milk quality and products.
“I believe our Bridgewater-Emery FFA chapter did really well. Especially for our first FFA CDE. We had six teams in the top five. Our individual scores were also very high. It was a great learning experience. I am very proud to be apart out Bridgewater-Emery and proud of how far we came and how far we will go as well as how we will do at state,” junior Sarah Schultz said.
Fifth place individuals were Dustin Weber in agronomy, Brooks Jansen in farm business management and Sarah Schultz in floriculture. Fourth place individuals were Lindsey Weeldreyer in farm business management and Taylor Clark in biotechnology. Third place individual was Kristin Kotas in milk quality and products. Second place individual was Cassandra Kerkhove in food science and technology. First place individuals were Sydney Hoffman in food science and technology and Mercedes Mesman in milk quality and products.
“I definitely think that it was a learning experience. Since it was the first one we all just went it in hopes to improve for the next one and we were pleasantly surprised to do very well,” senior Libby Bailey said.
Since all of District IV gathered to participate in the CDE, it was a prime time to have all of the members participate in a community service project. The students were tasked with writing letters and making bracelets.
Letters were written to elderly residents for their birthdays and were distributed to local nursing homes in District IV. They also wrote letters for soldiers to be sent overseas. A round table was stationed for making bracelets for children at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls.
“I think the Platte CDE was a very well thought out, educational experience. I liked that Sydney Hoffman made all of the kids make birthday cards and write letters to our soldiers overseas,” junior Bella DiGiovanni said.
Bridgewater-Emery FFA also competed in the Flandreau CDE March 21 and the Tri-Valley CDE March 28. They will go on the compete in the Lennox CDE April 6. All of this is in preparation for State FFA Convention which will be held April 15-17. The first place teams at state with have the opportunity to compete in their CDE at the national level.
