Bridgewater-Emery Celebrates National FCCLA Week
By Sydney Hoffman on March 3, 2018
FCCLA stands for Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, and is a nonprofit national career and technical student organization for young men and women in Family and Consumer Sciences education offered as CTE (career technical education) classes at many schools. This is the only national organization with family as its central focus. The organization has its own week dedicated for FCCLA students to promote the organization and provide leadership to the community. FCCLA week of 2018 took place Feb 12-16.
“As the Bridgewater-Emery FCCLA Chapter President, I met with the other officers, and we agreed that we wanted to take the opportunity of the national week to promote our chapter and showcase the hard work that the members put in. Those were our main goals when planning activities for the week,” senior Libby Bailey said.
Each day throughout the week was assigned a theme from the national board. Bridgewater-Emery based their activities for the week off of those daily themes.
Monday was “Promo Day” designed to promote FCCLA and the Bridgewater-Emery chapter. B-E accomplished the promotion plan by setting out FCCLA projects in the multi-purpose room in Emery during lunch so that students could venture out and learn more about the work being conducted by FCCLA members. To provide further explanation, members stood next to their project in the gym to answer any questions that the student body may have.
Tuesday, Feb. 13, the organization celebrated “Say Yes to FCS” day. Members were asked to tweet about how FCCLA had impacted them or knowledge they gained from a FACS class with the hashtag #PromoteFCCLA.
The next day, Wednesday, was FCCLA’s “Say Thanks” day. The Bridgewater-Emery chapter handed out Valentine’s day treats to students that had been ordered by friends and family the week before. The Valentine’s treats included “Crush” pop cans and melted almond bark over puffcorn.
Thursday, Feb. 15, was considered “Make an Impact” day. Students and staff were asked to bring paper products or hygiene items for the Food Pantry in order to receive a treat from the FACS teacher and FCCLA advisor, Mrs. Nelson. Products that were brought included napkins and canned foods.
The last day, Friday, was “Unite in Red” day. All FCCLA members, students and staff were asked to wear red to school in honor of FCCLA week to show awareness of the organization.
“Our goals were to celebrate FCCLA week, bring awareness to our organization, and let others know that we are thankful for their support and cooperation throughout the school year. We based our activities off of ideas state and national FCCLA were promoting each day. I personally feel like our chapter promoted the “thankfulness” idea the most throughout the week. Committee members handed out thank you treats to staff on Monday and they also visited the school board.
Furthermore, members wrote thank-you notes to staff. I feel it is important to thank those that help make our chapter a success; that all starts with the teachers, staff, and school board who allow and support students to participate in the many activities our chapter hosts throughout the school year,” FCCLA advisor Mrs. Nelson said.
FCCLA students are currently working on their Star Event projects to compete at the state convention Apr. 8-10
