Dakota Wesleyan University’s athletic department organizes the DWU classic sponsored primarily by Culver’s. This year marks the ninth annual DWU classic, which traditionally takes place in the corn palace of Mitchell, as it did this year Feb. 9-10.
Friday, Feb. 10 began the weekend of basketball off with the girls’ teams. The games started in the afternoon at 1:30 p.m. with Howard against Burke/South Central finishing the game 58-52 with a win from the Howard Tigers after overtime. At 3 p.m., Parkston went head to head with Pine Ridge. Pine ridge met victory that night 58-41. Next up was Corsica-Stickney against Bridgewater-Emery.
Corsica-Stickney went into the game with a 15-2 record and five experienced starting players. That experience showed in the Corn Palace that night in a victory over Bridgewater-Emery 64-44. The Cougars took a big leap in the first quarter of the game, jumping ahead 16-5 at the end of it, but the Huskies fought back in the second quarter to accumulate eighteen points in that quarter alone. Eighth-grader Julia Weber scored 14 points, while freshman Kerrigan Schultz had eight points, five rebounds and four assists.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game because their record was so good, but we came ready to play. I thought we had nice ball movement, but in the end, we came up short,” junior Abigail Arend said.
Then, Sioux Falls Christian went against McCook Central Montrose for the girls at 6 p.m. In a close game, 53-51, Sioux Falls Christian went home victorious. Next was Tripp-Delmont Armour against Avon at 7:30 p.m. Avon came out on top 62-47. Finally, the Friday night finished with Hanson and De Smet. The first quarter started slow and ended close with 11-10 in favor for the Huskies. Then, things began to heat up in the second quarter to end the half 33-21. The court stayed hot through the second half, along with the energy in the Corn Palace. In the end, the Bridgewater-Emery Huskies took victory 65-52. Junior Sawyer Schultz led the Huskies with 22 points, seven steals, six rebounds and four assists. Junior Carter Dye added 17 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Cole
