Bridgewater-Emery Basketball Competes Against Irene-Wakonda
February 18, 2019
B-E boys’ and girls’ basketball teams played in a doubleheader against Irene-Wakonda in Emery Tuesday, Feb. 12. The girls’ team played first losing a tough game against the Eagles 46-41. The boys’ team played next winning their game 71-58.
The girls’ teams began the night for varsity games, and the Eagles took the lead right away ending the first half 11-19. The Huskies did not give up without a fight, though, especially in the few final minutes. The Huskies’ aggressiveness and determined attitude weren’t enough to stop the Eagles from making their final free throws in the last minute of the game that put them on top. The game ended with a Huskie loss 41-46. This loss marks only the third one for the Huskie girls finishing their record 15-3 and ranking them eleventh in the state.
“Toward the beginning of the game, both teams started off slow; not many shots were being made,” sophomore Kerrigan Schultz said. “Our team didn’t shoot the ball like normal, but we played hard defensive, especially in the end. I hope that we continue to play with that much aggressiveness going into regions.”
Freshman Julia Weber led the team with 16 points, while senior Abigal Arend added 12 points. Kerrigan Schultz had 13 rebounds, and senior Jada Wethor contributed seven rebounds, too.
The boys’ teams continued the night starting off strong. The Huskies pulled ahead in the beginning, ending the first half 41-34, and the fight continued from both teams in the second half. Although, the Eagle’s hustle was not enough to pull off a win, and instead, the Huskies finished in victory 71-58. After this win, the boys held a 15-3 record and ranked fourth in the state behind White River, Timer Lake and Jones County.
“We began the game strong, and we finished just as hard,” senior Sawyer Schultz said. “The Irene-Wakonda boys were fast, but we played aggressive defensive and smart offensive. With only a couple regular season games left, I think we are sitting in a good spot preparing for region play.”
Senior Carter Dye led the team with a whopping 27 points. Sawyer Schultz added 19 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Junior Chase Arend contributed 15 points, while his brother, senior Jamin Arend finished with ten points and nine rebounds.
The B-E boys’ basketball team played their next game Feb.15 against Parker in Emery, and the B-E girls’ basketball team transitioned into region play Feb. 19 in Emery.
