Breckenridge MN Hands Huskies First Loss
January 3, 2018
Bridgewater-Emery boys basketball team faced Breckenridge Minnesota in the Hoop City Classic at the Corn Palace on Friday, Dec. 28.
The Huskies struggled offensively putting up only 30 points and having foul trouble in the first half. The Huskies went on a scoring run pulling within eight points heading into the locker room down 30-38.
“I thought we came out with more energy second half and started to be more aggressive offensively battling our way back into the game,” head coach Scott Schultz said. “We were disappointed coming up a bit short in overtime but took a step in the right direction for the rest of the season.”
In the second half, the Huskies showed more energy and executed the offense. They took their largest lead of four, but Breckenridge’s hot shooting kept the score close. Huskies had multiple opportunities to win the game in regulation, but free throws were not falling. The Huskies finished 14 of 27 from the line. Breckenridge has the basketball with 12 seconds left, but the Huskies defended successfully forcing the game into overtime.
Breckenridge held lead throughout the overtime period. With seconds winding down the Huskies were forced to shoot a last-second shot which hit the front of the rim giving Breckenridge the win, with a score of 79-77.
“Although we lost, this was a fun competitive game,” senior Sawyer Schultz said. “We usually shot free throws much better than we did during this game, but sometimes those things happen.”
Leading the way for the Huskies was Sawyer Schultz with 23 points and junior Jonah Hofer finished with 19. Senior Carter Dye scored 15 and tallied ten rebounds, while Jamin Arend scored 13. Breckenridge was led by Noah Christensen with 33 points and 12 rebounds.
B-E’s record is now 4-1. They will take on conference rival Freeman Flyers Friday, Jan. 5 in Freeman.
