Boys’ Basketball Takes on Regions

By Sydney Hoffman on March 14, 2018
South Dakota Class B basketball has switched to a sweet 16 ranking method this year. Each game throughout the season was worth seed points with every win. The seed points rank each team within each region. The eighth and ninth teams in each region will play each other in the first region game. Then, the first seed will play the eighth seed, the second seed will play the seventh seed, the third seed will play the sixth seed and so on.

Bridgewater-Emery went into region play with a 17-3 record, placing them at the top of their region, which is region five. After having a bye the first game, the B-E boys played Gayville-Volin Feb. 27 at 3:30 p.m. in Mount Marty at Yankton.
The first quarter started off rough and ended 15-12, but the Huskies picked up the heat in the second quarter ending the half 39-22. The Huskies regrouped during half-time and came out strong after warming up during the first half. After the third quarter, the Huskies were up 63-37. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, junior Carter Dye brought the heat by ending a great play with a slam dunk. The team finished the game strong, even after putting in the junior varsity. The final score of the game was 78-44 in favor of the Bridgewater-Emery Huskies.

All five of the team’s starters scored in double figures against the Gayville-Volin Raiders. Senior Duot Vansickle had sixteen points and eleven rebounds. Junior Jamin Arend also scored 16 points, senior Cole Gassman added fourteen points, junior Sawyer Schultz had twelve points and junior Carter Dye tossed in eleven points.

“Despite a shaky start to the game, we pulled it off. In the future, though, to get as far as possible this post season, we need to start the game how we always end it,” senior Duot Vansickle said.

After their win Feb.27, the Huskies moved onto the final region round Mar. 2 where they played Irene-Wakonda again in Yankton at the high school at 7 p.m.

This game also began close, reaching to a tied score of six in the first quarter before the Bridgewater-Emery Huskies went on a run and did not allow the Irene-Wakonda Eagles to make any more shots that first quarter. The Huskies took the lead with a score of 16-6 by the end of the first quarter. The Eagles tried to fire back in the second quarter, only to get shot down again by the Huskies who ended the half 29-17. The court was heated rolling into the third quarter starting with a dunk from junior Sawyer Schultz; however, Irene Wakonda did not give up. The Eagles added 17 points in the third quarter, which matched their score after half-time. The third quarter ended in favor of the Huskies 47-34. Following this, the Eagles admitted defeat as the Huskies added more 20 points in the final quarter to end the game at 67-41.

Junior Sawyer Schultz led the night with 27 points and six rebounds. Senior Duot Vansickle added 17 points and 12 rebounds while junior Jamin Arend had 11 points, seven assists and five rebounds.

“I believe we played better this game than the last, and I am hoping that we can keep improving going into the sweet 16,” junior Sawyer Schultz said.

Huskies boys’ basketball will continue Mar. 8 at the West Central High School against the De Smet Bulldogs
