Boys’ Basketball Season Is Underway

By Sydney Hoffman on December 5, 2018
As the temperature drops and the snow begins to fall, the basketball hoops are lowered down, and the season begins. The boys have hung up their padding and helmets from the fall. They have traded in their cleats for basketball shoes. The break between seasons was not long, but the boys were ready and anxious to get back on the court.

“We are excited to get the season started, but we have to replace a number of seniors from last year,” head coach Scott Schultz said. “We have a hard-working group that I hope will be able to compete with the teams in our region and across the state by the end of the season.”

Practice started Nov. 26 after school in the new gym. The boys’ team is gearing up for their first game on Dec. 13 against Menno at the new gym in Emery.

For the 2018-2019 season, there will be four senior boys going out for basketball, three of which have varsity experience. Senior leadership is very important when growing a younger team with less experience. Some of the younger classmen have not seen much varsity time, so senior leadership from Sawyer Schultz, Jamin Arend and Carter Dye will be very important.

“Basketball is a fun game,” Sawyer Schultz said. “It’s about being a good team and having every aspect that a team should have to help each other succeed, and our team has all the aspects, so we have the potential to do really well.”

These three seniors and returning juniors played on the team that won the State B Boys’ Basketball Championship in the 2016-2017 season. Those players returned to the tournament last season to finish third in the state.

“For this season, I hope to see our team have more chemistry and another state championship win in the end,”  Arend said.

The boys’ first game will be in Emery Dec. 13 against the Menno Wolves. The girls’ season kicks off first Dec. 8 in Emery against the Wessington Springs Spartans.
