March 4, 2019
Bridgewater-Emery girls basketball team was one of two teams to come out of region 5 to advance to the SoDak16. The Huskies took on the Ipswich Tigers on Thursday. Feb. 28 in Huron. The Tigers defeated the Huskies 51-40.
The Huskies started out strong coming in the No.10 seed playing the No.7 seed. It was a battle point for point in the first quarter. Both teams were struggling offensively to get anything sparking. The Huskies led 11-10 after the first quarter and trailed 23-25 going into halftime.
Coming out the Huskies still couldn’t get anything going. Defensively it became a struggle as the Tigers outscored the Huskies 15-5 in the third quarter to extend the lead to 40-28. The Huskies weren’t not giving up going into the fourth quarter. They continued to fight and get stops on defense knowing who they had to contain, but the Tigers were just too much for the Huskies at the end.
“I thought we played very well this season,” senior Jada Wethor said. “We played to the final buzzer and had fun. I will miss playing the sport I love with the girls. Even though it didn’t end the way we wanted it to, I am so unbelievably proud of us.”
For the Huskies, the scoring was evenly distributed. Senior Abigal Arend led with nine points while senior Tessa Burnham and freshman Julia Weber tailed eight points apiece. Sophomore Kerrigan Schultz grabbed five points and eight rebounds while Arend and Weber also grabbed five rebounds each.
“We came up short in our team goal of getting to the State B’s, but these girls have nothing to hang their heads about,” head coach Jessie VanLeur said. “They spent many hours in the gym and weight room during the off-season putting in the time it takes to be successful. During the season they were a no quit team. Always digging deep and playing to the final buzzer whether it was being up by ten or down by ten. I couldn’t be prouder of each teammate.”
The Huskies finished the season with an 18-4 record looking to continue pushing the success going into next season.
