BE Huskies Take Down Burke Cougars
By Kerrigan Schultz February 18, 2019
Bridgewater-Emery girls basketball team took on Burke Friday, Feb. 8 at the Corn Palace. The Huskies defeated the Cougars with a win of 63-36.
It was a close point for point battle in the first quarter of the DWU Classic game until the Huskies had a strong second quarter to pull away before half time outscoring Burke 22-7.
Coming out of half time, the Huskies were too much for the Cougars and kept extending the lead looking for their 16th win on the season. The Huskies really looked to push the ball and focused hard on the defense and getting stops.
“We came out a little slow in the first quarter and didn’t rebound the ball well,” head coach Jessie VanLeur said. “Second quarter and into the second half we did a better job rebounding and pushing the ball up the court.”
For the Huskies Freshman, Julia Weber led with a game-high of 20 points while Sophomore Kerrigan Schultz added 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds to earn MVP honors of the game. Senior Abigal Arend also pitched in 11 points for the win.
“I thought we played really well as a team,” Weber said. “We moved the ball well and did a pretty good job of rebounding.”
With the win, the Huskies improved their record to 16-2.
