After a long, eventful week for the Huskies, they managed to dig deep inside and perform with determination and mental toughness while competing in the volleyball tournament held at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls on Sept. 23. The outcome of the tournament left the Huskies with a 9-9 record and eleven games in one week. They managed to defeat the Howard Lady Tigers and the Avon Lady Pirates, while taking a few losses to the Sioux Valley Cossacks, Hanson Beaverettes and Coleman-Egan Hawks.
The Huskies played two pool play matches in the morning against Sioux Valley and Avon. These determined their division in tournament play.
In the first match, the Huskies played the Sioux Valley Cossacks. The Huskies played strong and took the A school point for point until the Cossacks managed to pull away in the first set winning 25-11. For the second set, the Huskies started with the same mindset and played the Cossacks point for point until the Cossacks pulled away, winning the second set 25-15.
Katelyn Kotas managed to roundup four kills, 11 digs and one ace while Andrea Gorriz added six digs and one ace.
In the second match, the Huskies managed to pick up their energy and defeat the Avon Lady Pirates in two sets. The Huskies stepped onto the court with a new attitude and mindset, shaking off the first game. They started out strong and kept pushing points throughout the match. The set scores were 25-14 and 25-19.
“I felt as if Avon could have brought more competition onto the court, but we did not let their lack of energy bring our level of playing down. We managed to keep our level of intensity up and finish the game in two sets,” middle hitter Ashley Horvath said.
The stats for the second match consisted of Sydney Hoffman with six kills. Haley Schulz added four blocks while Katelyn Kotas pitched in four kills, 12 digs and one ace. Andrea Gorriz contributed 10 digs to the win against the Lady Pirates.
As a result of the 1-1 record from the Huskies in pool play, they advanced to tournament play in the afternoon. The Huskies played three games in the afternoon against Howard, Hanson and Coleman-Egan.
The first afternoon match found the Huskies playing Howard. The Huskies had recently beat Howard and managed to do it again on Saturday. In the first set, the Huskies took the win with a score of 25-15. The Lady Tigers came out after losing the first set and put up a fight against the Huskies. However, the Huskies still managed to beat the Lady Tigers 25-22.
“We had recently played Howard earlier in the week so we knew what to expect. We knew who we had to watch out for on their team. I feel we did an excellent job reading what they were going to do and communicating with each other. I was very satisfied by the way we played against them,” defensive specialist Andrea Gorriz said.
Haley Schulz rounded up three kills and three blocks while Kennedee Weber had five kills. Sophia Potter contributed 11 assists and five digs, while Libby Bailey added 17 digs.
The second afternoon match was the B-E Huskies against the Hanson Beaverettes. This game determined who moved on to play for places 1-4. Both the Huskies and Beaverettes came out strong, but the Beaverettes kept pushing points as the Huskies continued to make errors. The Beaverettes took the victory over the Huskies in two sets. The scores consisted of 25-8 and 25-14.

The third set of the afternoon determined who took 3rd and 4th place. The Huskies battled the Coleman-Egan Hawks and took them into three sets. Coleman-Egan edged away, taking the victory in the first set 25-23. The Huskies knew this was their last game and fought back, winning the second set 25-23. The Huskies came out strong for the third set and were managing to keep the lead. Soon however, the Huskies began to stop communicating and put themselves down. The Hawks took the victory for the third set 25-18 and the Huskies walked out with 4th place in their division.

“The Huskies seemed to be a little sleepy during the first game against Sioux Valley, but as the day went on, they managed to pick up their intensity on the court and get a few victories throughout the day,” junior Kinzer Glanzer said.
