B-E Huskie Girls and Boys Power Past the Howard Tigers

Bridgewater-Emery Huskie girls and boys traveled down to Howard on Thursday, Jan. 17 for a night filled with basketball. The varsity girls final score was 64-62, and the varsity boys ended with an 80-55 victory.
“I thought the boys really played as a team,” head coach Scott Schultz said. “We found the open guy and shared the ball well.
I thought we rebounded well and our defense in the second half was solid.”
The Bridgewater-Emery Huskies started off the game strong going into halftime leading 44-32. They pushed 36 points in the second half of the game. The final score for the Huskie victory was 80-55.
“It was a fun game to play with the boys,” senior Carter Dye says, “It being us three senior’s final year playing basketball together we have to make them count and have fun with each other. Overall, it was a great win against the Howard Tigers.”
Senior Carter Dye was the lead scorer with 24 points, eight rebounds, two steals, senior Sawyer Schultz followed with 19 points, eight rebounds, three steals, two blocks, senior Jamin Arend contributed 16 points, eight rebounds, and three steals each contributing multiple three-pointers. Junior Chase Arend scored 10 points, four rebounds, four steals, junior Jonah Hofer added nine points, three rebounds, one steal, sophomore Rylee Schultz had two points, three rebounds, one block. The Huskies finished with 38 rebounds (9 offensive/ 29 defensive), five blocks, and 15 steals.
The Huskie girls got behind early in the game against the Howard Tigers. The end of the first quarter score was 9-21. They persevered and came out strong during the second quarter scoring 23 points making the halftime score 32-34. During the third quarter, the Huskies came out on top scoring 13 points compared to the Tigers’ eight making the score 45-42. The Huskies and Tigers battled back and forth throughout the final quarter. The Huskies defeated the Howard Tigers by a buzzer beater shot made by freshman Julia Weber. The lady Huskies finished with a 64-62 victory.
“It was a very exciting game to be in,” Julia Weber said. “We have always been taught to play until the final buzzer and that’s what we did. It was a hard battle, but we are grateful that we came out on top.”
Weber was leading scorer with 26 points, 13 of them being during the fourth quarter. She also had seven rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Senior Abigal Arend contributed 14 points and senior Tessa Burnham added eight points. Sophomore Kerrigan Schultz had 10 points and 12 rebounds while senior Jada Wethor pulled down eight rebounds, The Huskies finished with 43 rebounds (16 offensive/27 defensive), three blocks, and nine steals.
“We fell behind early in the first quarter and really had to battle back,” head coach Jessie VanLeur said. “It was a tough win against a fundamentally sound team, but the girls did a great job of playing as a team and until the final buzzer.”
The boys improved their record to 9-1 and the girls improved their record to 10-2. The Huskies are back in action Friday, Feb. 1 in a doubleheader against Gayville-Volin. The Huskies will play at Gayville with JV boys and girls playing at 5 p.m. followed by varsity girls and varsity boys.
